I need some advice

I'm a 27 year old male. I weigh about 165lb. and about 5'9". I used to be very slender and weigh around 140lb., but In the past year or 2 I've started to put on weight and got a little flab going on around my neck and stomach. I'm good at training dogs, working on computers, and seem to be somewhat of a "jack of all trades", but when it comes to figuring out how to loose this flab I am dumb as a brick apparently. I figure it had something to do with getting depressed and stopped caring about how I looked. I've decided to pick myself up (belly and all) and fix this before it goes out of control...but like I said, I'm dumb when it comes to this and need some advice.

I've taken up 9round which is training kick boxers go through and I am currently on the plan where you go twice a week for 30 mins.

I've started drinking slim fast if I don't have time for breakfast or if I'm just not hungry. I realize I need to eat something or my metabolism slows down.

I used to smoke but have quit for about a month now because it was hard to breath and work out at the same time. :p

I take 1 multivitamin, 1 b vitamin complex, 3 saint john's wort, 3 fish oil, 1 to 3 echinacea, and 1 to 3 caffeine pills a day. I used to drink a lot of energy drinks.

My biggest problems is I do not know what to eat, how much, and when. And my even bigger than that problem is I hate vegetables. I've started drinking these v8 fusions to try and make up for that. Why try and eat something I can't keep down anyway?

I work 2 jobs and have a hard time finding time or the energy to exercise or cook. I'm not looking for a quick fix, but I hope there is someone else out there with the same issues that may be able to give me some good pointers and some meal suggestions.

What more exercises should I do other than go to 9round? What should an anti-vegetable guy like me eat or is the multivitamins and v8 good enough? How much of what should I eat and is a slim fast every now and then a good idea? Is subway a good way to go for a meal?

So yeah...any help would be appreciated.

Slimfast is probably not your best option - I think even one of the Special K protein shakes would be better than SlimFast. And if you don't feel hungry and don't have issues... I'm not sure skipping breakfast is such a horrible thing.

Exercise - read the Conceptual Side of Weight Training under the stickies that Steve wrote. Although there's nothing wrong with doing the kickboxing training, weight training is the most useful exercise to do if you're actually losing weight.

What to eat - well I first recommend figuring out exactly what you do eat, and how many calories you're getting. Fitday.com is a great place to do this. Once you know about how many calories you eat in a day it will help you plan what you should be eating.

On veggies - truth told I'm not sure a V-8 fusion is much better than a multi-vitamin. And it really would be much better if you could eat some veggies. My husband was anti-veggie (BIG time) and he's slowly been warming up to them.

Rule 1) Roast the veggies in salt & olive oil. This makes them taste better. Drizzle on olive oil, salt, put in 425 degree oven until they get somewhat crispy.
Rule 2) Give it 3 tries - supposedly acquired tastes take time to acquire. Normally you have to try something 3 times before your taste buds decide it's acceptable. ... It was a while before my husband would not decry the 'Vile weed' whenever he saw broccoli.
Rule 3) Try mixing it with other, tastier things. Bacon makes things better :p Almost everyone I know will eat asparagus if it's wrapped in prosciutto & cream cheese and then roasted or grilled.

I also go for Dry Roasted Edamame (soy beans) because they are salty, snack like, and loaded with protein & fiber.

Oatmeal is also not bad, although I fortify mine with whey protein powder.

Other whole grains such as quinoa, lentils etc. can help make up for at least some of the lack of veggies. I also love sweet potatoes, even if they're on the starchy side.

Beyond that - get 'enough' protein - probably around 130-150g a day for you, try to eat as many fruits & veggies as you can handle (strawberries are an excellent fruit), try to stay under 2000 calories (approx 12calories per lb of body weight), and don't sweat the rest too much. See how that works for a while, and make adjustments as necessary.

What I do eat? I love meat :p. If it's meat I'll eat it. If I get a sub at subway I do like to put lettuce, green peppers, and onions on it. About the only other veggie I like is carrots. I do like fruit though.

I've been told that eating a bigger breakfast than lunch is a good way to go. I'm just never that hungry in the morning...but I also have been eating a bigger dinner.

Yeah, but how many calories of meat ;) And how much fat is in that meat. And how much non-meat, non-fruit, non-veggies do you actually eat ;)

Knowing how many calories you're actually eating can really help you plan.

As far as the bigger breakfast/lunch - I think it works for some people and not for others.

The most important thing is to eat less calories than you use in one day. Specific items, slim drinks, protein bars, vegetables, meat are all just pieces of this bigger picture.

Plugging your age, height, weight and gender into a basal metabolic rate calculator, you have a BMR of 1786.65 calories per day. That means that at rest your body needs these calories to maintain energy balance (calories used = calories eaten).

Since this does not take into account activity (you mentioned kick boxing), you likely need more than this FOR ENERGY BALANCE.

If you want to lose weight for sure, keep your daily intake of food in calories below the number above. You WILL lose weight.

That has to be your single purpose in losing weight. Forget all of the vitamins, minerals etc. and use your head to eat balanced diet under that calorie intake.

My question to you is, what do you see doing differently in your life after you have lost the weight (dating, sports, looking good). Tell me

That's what I'm stupid about. I used to be able to eat what ever I wanted up until about 2 years ago...maybe less. Now Even when I cut back on some of the things I'm eating I don't seem to loose this flab I've gained. I know I need to keep my metabolism up by eating so eating 1 meal a day is probably not a good idea. I try to by lean meats (though I was guilty of eating out all the time due to always being on the go) As far as anything else...I really don't eat that much bread. I think I'm getting a better Idea of what to do though.

I have never been the least bit flabby up until about 2 years ago. I guess I just see it as "not me" and I want to get back to being "me".

The info everyone is giving is really helpful. Thank you all.

Have you kept a food diary to track what you eat for a week? You'd be surprised just how much we all underestimate just how much we eat. I was like you. I sure didn't eat many meals a day..till I did a diary and saw it was not only how often but what it was.

Oh, drop that V8 fusion crap. It's alot of extra calories and sugar. If you want to do the veggies of it, do the regular V8. A can is only 80 calories, try adding some pepper to give it a kick.

Some final advice. This may sound harsh, but don't be stupid or dumb. You mentioned that you were stupid and dumb and I do not think it has anything to do with being either of these. Listen to what we have said to you here. Three steps:

1. Count the calories (every one of them) everyday.
2. Cut out enough calories so that you are eating less than your body needs - 1786.65 calories per day
3. Get exercise 3 to 4 times per week.

You cannot ever eat whatever you want at a specific age. You will need to log whatever you eat and take it from there. The food is the part that i am guessing you have not paid attention to.
