I need serious help!

Hey everyone...

I'm trying to get down to 145 lbs before the summer ends for me (August 31) and I just weighed myself today: I'm 158. That's a 1.4 lb raise from last week and I don't understand how it happened.

I've been exercising a great deal, but admittedly I've been eating a lot of junk on multiple days. I am now declaring war and seeing this as the primary issue. But, I've been drinking three cups of green tea per day, which is supposed to help accelerate fat loss. For some reason that doesn't appear to be the case. I eat a lot of bagels, but now I'm considering removing them from my regular diet until I reach a satisfying low weight. Right now I'm eating cereal with a small amount of orange juice. Should I just avoid junk food at all costs? Advice is appreciated. Thanks!

No amount of green tea will magically make you lose weight if you are eating more calories than your body needs. You will gain or lose the same amount of weight whether you're drinking green tea or not. Maybe, if you're drinking the tea instead of soda, that is how they claim it helps you lose weight, but that has nothing to do with the tea itself.

If you're serious about doing this, time to do some research. Learn about BMR, and "maintenance level calories". Understand that in order to lose weight, you have to be in a calorie defecit, or less than maintenance. Each 500 calories below maintenance will lead to a 1lb loss per week. Learn how quickly you can safely lose weight - 1% of your current weight per week, and how many calories you have to eat to achieve that rate of loss. And then, know how much you're eating, in calories. You might have to count, measure, and weight food for a while. If you're not seeing the progress you expect, the first thing to do is count to confirm that you're eating exactly or at least close to the number of calories you think you're eating. Then make sure you're in the deficit you think you are and you're maintenance is what you think it is. If all you do is cut things out until you reach a satisfying weight, and then allow them back in, all you will do is gain the weight back. You have to work out a lifestyle change that is not restrictive, so there is nothing to stop doing or add back in after you reach your goal.

The stickies here are a good place to start. The "How many calories should I eat" in the nutrition subforum might be a good first read for you, and all the others have useful info as well.

Good luck!

Mguy. Quit eating crap buddy! Try to eat healthy and stay away from fast food. The exercise is great keep it up but all those bad calories are too hard to work off.

Stay the course, you'll get there.

Avoiding junk food would definitely help you, but the most important thing in my opinion is to get a scale for your food and count every calorie. Write down everything you eat in a day.

If you're eating things like bagels and cereals, it's easy to go over your calorie limit because of how calorie dense those foods are.

(For example 1 cup of pasta is nearly 400 calories, and it doesn't look like a big serving.)

Switch to eating lean protein like shrimp and fish, eat eggs (2 eggs are very filling even though they're small), if you can tolerate milk a glass of milk is also very filling, eat lots of vegetables (like large plates of vegetable soup). Eat some fruits. I wouldn't drink orange juice if I were you, better to drink water because orange juice simply won't fill you up.

In my opinion grains/pastas and so on are a bad idea when you are on a diet, simply because of how many calories are in them. 400 calories of fish and vegetables will really fill you up, but 400 calories of grains won't.

Lol at the green tea! You cannot take fat away by eating certain foods or chemicals- its all a marketing scam- most companies are in on it. Don't be under any impression then the fact that weight loss is related to what you eat and keeping the calories to a weight loss level. Theres no more science to it then that. The best thing you can do to help yourself stick to a lower calorie goal is to make sure your eating the correct macros (protein, complex carbs, healthy fats) and not missing anything out- missing stuff out can create cravings and cravings can be comlicated to deal with, often leaving you thinking your hungrier then you really are or even giving confused signals- you end up eating junk or sugar instead of complex carbs as your body is asking for energy your missing and your not as able to listen to it. Also being too busy, stressed or tierd can result in feeling confused cravings for foods you don't need instead of what the cravings are actually about.

Count your calories- not your green tea- green tea does nothing other then feed you caffiene and help you reach your 1.5L of fluid required for a day.

Totally agreed. Although bagels seem like a "healthier" choice, most of the time they have lots of calories and if you add anything to the bagel it just adds to the calorie intake.

Also, I would watch the orange juice - it can be very high in sugar.

I'm in the same boat! Of weight that is...Whats been working for me is plain and simple....TONS of water (no exageration), limit carbs to veggies and fruit, protein protein protein. I'm even cutting down on my fruit to only the morning, cardio and strength training. My trick is also to stay off the scale for 2 weeks. I've lost 15 pounds this way and it is literally falling off. Plus I'm never hungary! Before bed, if I get a little tummy growl, I LOVE cherry tomatoes. They are super sweet, like grapes but zero surgar and close to no calories...good luck!
