I just don't get Red Velvet cake.

Okay, it's not bad, but I just don't get it? What's the deal? So what??!?!?!? It's red, It's got a bit of cocoa powder in there (not really even enough to taste).
So, what's the deal? Is it the color that makes everyone oooh and ahhhh? I guess that makes sense, but really, it's just cake.

I haven't even heard of red velvet cake. The only cakes I ever eat are the ones that my boss makes at work, and they are proper cakes, with butter cream and sugar icing and all that sugary goodness. So anything shop-bought is a no-go. But I'd guess this red velvet cake is just the 'in-thing' right now. We always seem to have a couple of food items that are in *the* thing to eat and rave about, even if nobody knows why.

mmmm.. red velvet cake with cream cheese frosting. It's not my favorite, but I do like it. Yeah, I shouldn't be looking at this thread... now I want cake. lol!

*lol*...I know what you mean. When I read it yesterday, I ended up looking at the pictures of the cakes my boss made (she makes amazing ones in all kinds of shapes and whatnot), and I wanted cake sooooo badly. Still do. And worse, there is a big piece in my freezer that I would just need to defrost.....*sigh*. :drool5:

Cream cheese frosting. That explains it. Can't resist the creaminess of that which cream cheese. Gotta have a bagel now.
(The most recent red velvet cake I had was a non dairy version, so it only regular frosting, explains a lot.)

And here's a picture for those of you who might be hungry!!! [insert evil laughter here]

Monster, you're an evil person. But while we're here...here's some stuff that my boss made. The first one was one she made for my birthday this year. It looked amazing from the outside, but it was the inside that really got to me:

Wowzers....didn't know these pictures were so big!!!!

Anyway, here are some more of her creations...I tell you, the woman is in the wrong business....and just for the record, everything on there is handmade, and edible, decorations and all!

Yeah, she's done all sorts of things. Made a computer mouse for my husband's birthday cake which looked great as well! :) As far as I know, it's usually 2 - 3 days, since she makes everything from scratch, and she does it on her own, in her tiny kitchen. I've heard her mention working longer on them though - not the cake itself, but she made a wedding cake with 250 tiny flowers, several butterflies and whatnot, and getting the decoration ready took her another couple of days, before she even started on the cake.

I have to admit; those are one of the best cakes I have ever seen. Only comparable with the ones from TV or Internet, which are usually made by a team of people.

In a way, it reminds me of Ben Starr on "Master chef", not because he also made a cake, but for the passion towards his work.

You know what the sad thing is? She is making these in her spare time, while working as a manager in a charity shop. She loves making these cakes, and she is so good at it, and I am sure she could really make a business out of it, but she can't get anybody to give her the money to get started. So she is stuck with this crappy job, and she doesn't even charge people enough for the cakes to make any real money out of it. Barely covers the costs for the materials, never mind all the time and effort she puts into them. I sure wish I had some money, I'd help her get a business up and running in a heartbeat!
