I cought the last couple of minutes of a workout program earlier. The instructor, well, she had great abs! What are some ways to achieve abs like the people on Fit TV?

Watch the workout problem lol

You have abs. If you don't see them, they are covered by fat. Diet.

It's really that simple.

Well.....it's not just "diet".

Many people diet but don't have abs showing.

Why the sarcasm????

I just want to remind everyone that sarcasm doesn't translate well on a forum and it can be highly offensive. Make sure you're crystal clear when crackin' a joke or people will get upset.

Diet also doesnt mean "eating to lose weight." It is what you eat, no matter what. Not meant as offensive.

diet- the foods eaten, as by a particular person or group

To OP. Bodyfat reduction is key to having visible abs. This is best achieved with proper nutrition and a good exercise program.

And since we all want to be technical.... I'm game for that. It's really the way it should be.

Unfortunately, it seems a lot of "advice" being passed around this site as of late is lacking technicality.

And "diet" has multiple definitions. One of them being:

such a selection or a limitation on the amount a person eats for reducing weight

Ahhh, the English language..... isn't it great!?

I'll agree that losing the fat is 80-90% of the issue. But, I did that this past winter and got down to 153 at the beginning of March or so. I was skinny... and... well... I was skinny. That's the least amount of fat I've ever had in my life, including now, and I didn't have great abs whatsoever. If it were as simple as dieting and losing the fat, how come my abs weren't the absolute greatest at this time?

Since then I have gained 7 or 8 pounds, including some fat in the love handle area, but my abs have popped out the most AFTER I started gaining weight, over the past few months, not when I had the least amount of fat. They're showing alot more now at 160-161 pounds than at 153. So yes, exercise comes into play, but it won't do any good if you've got an inch or two (or more) of fat covering them up.

As for exercises, all this crap you see on TV or whatever is just that... crap. High reps and expensive devices are a bunch of bull. You've got to do the lower rep slower stuff. 15-20 reps should be about the most you can do of something. Once you get to a certain point, alot of people just quit working them specifically altogether, because other exercises work them plenty. For example, try doing a one handed dumbbell row with one hand and one knee on a weight bench. It works your abs like crazy, sometimes it seems like more than the upper back that you're trying to hit.

Your definition of skinny does not translate into seeing your abs Corn.

Genetics are one factor.

Secondly, skinny and lean are different concepts. Getting lean enough for anyone to see their abs is a very hard task.

On a related note, I've noticed that if you look at mine from an angle or from the sides, I look ripped as hell now. Certain angles seriously look like a damn fitness model. However, and unfortunately, looking at them from other angles, like straight on, they don't look nearly as defined. I mean it's obvious that everything is flat and you can see a few ripples, but they look NOTHING like they do from an angle, at least given the lighting in my bathroom. I have been wondering if this is normal or something I need to work on. Do the models in the magazines and stuff have to mess with different angles and lighting to look that ripped or are they like that all the time? I can't decide if this is perfectly normal or if I'm just right at the tip of the iceberg for great abs.

Haha, lighting and different mirrors change appearance like crazy. It's the same with me. Don't compare yourself to models in magazines man.... you'll drive yourself crazy. They make conditions perfect for making someone look top notch.
