I enjoy yoga

I am new to this forum, I just ran across it while surfing and it looked quite interesting.
I ran across the yoga link and thought would put in my two cents.

I have been doing yoga off and on now for a couple of years.

I started when I became concerned about the fact that as I was getting older my flexibility had pretty much gone down hill and my balance was not much better.
I also like the fact that its slow paced so even if you are new at it and are not 100% understanding as you go, its slow enough paced that you can catch up and not feel like a ditz.

I have not attended any classes but have quite a few video tapes which after awhile I did find were repeating themselves. So I took what I wanted and felt would help me most out of the tapes and came up with my own practice and do it now.

Thanks for letting me put in my two cents

If you like your tapes and have never taken a proper yoga class I'd suggest checking one out. At 15-20 bucks a lessoon I can't justify going on a regular basis. But for personal attention, variety and great constructive critisism (which, in yoga is both gentle and very helpful) classes are unbeatable.

I would love to kinda check it out, classes I mean. I don't have any locally though.

Sometimes I wonder if when I'm doing a pose if there is more that I could be doing with it than I am that kinda thing.

I watch the tv shows and tapes and pick up stuff here and there to add to my own practice.

What kinda of yoga class did you go to? I've heard there is so many different ones?

I think mostly Hatha. They change the names to "Healthy Back yoga" and "Power Yoga"...so not sure. Recently tried Bikram (In a 100 degree (F) room).

None locally? Around here, you can take a class at group fitness classes, through adult ed programs and even at massage schools, in addition to yoga specific studios... there' nothing up there in the Great North? I guess short of a web-conference tapes woudl be the way to go then...

I've seen that one on tv where you work out in a hot room suppostu encourage everything to open up and work nicer, personally I think all that would do is make me horribly nausceous pardon the spelling.
I think you definetly have to like heat to do that one.
How did you do with it?

Not sure which kind I do, I picked different things out of some tapes I have and what they show on tv and made up my own practice that I add to from time to time when I see something that will fit in it. Got it up to 1/2 an hour now would like it to be a bit longer.

Yoga

I'll add my 2 cents to yours!

I was surfing through the WWW & bumped into this site too! It's the first forum I've ever joined & posted to.

I love Yoga too, I'm just an amateur at it - but it can be great for strength, balance & flexibility. When you get used to a routine, you can even use it for a challenging Cardio workout too!

If you enjoy Yoga, Alberta65, your "excited" back will love Pilates. Similar to Yoga's slow, cotrolled movements, but focuses on core strengthening & stability - & we all need stronger backs & abs! It's amazing how fast you see & feel the results.

Give it a try! ;)

I have actually tried pilates off and on for a few years now, I find that my stomach is starting to feel but my back is definetly taking longer to get heheh happy.

I have never tried speeding up my practice for a cardio work out might have to give that a try.

How long have you been doing yoga/pilates MissFit?

What kind of yoga do you do?

I believe it's Hatha. I've done yoga off & on for several years - I do it mostly to increase my flexibility - and when I want a good no-impact workout. Personally I haven't done it for Cardio - it's HARD! I've researched it before though, and if you want to make it a cardio workout, it's recommended that you learn the entire routine in slow mo - take the Sun Salutation for ex., then progressively speed it up to whatever pace puts you in your THR zone. But...proper strong form is most important - never sacrafice the form for speed.

I like yoga for the flexibility factor as well. Notice ladies as they get older that their flexibility and balance goes and I would like to hold onto what I have for as long as I can.

Do you do tapes? or have you come up with your own practice?

For a good workout (I'd consider it cardio) try Rodney Yee's Power Yoga. I'm always dripping sweat afterwards and my muscles "shake" (know what I'm talking about?). It isn't too difficult for a beg/intermediate. My gym currently offers 16 yoga or pilates classes a week, including a couple of pilates ball classes. For the enthusiast (like me!) it's awesome! :) Oh! And I currently LOVE the "Classical Pilates Technique: Complete Mat Workout" for Intermediates. It moves VERY fast so you can get a great workout in hardly any time!

The Classical Pilates DVD I just mentioned is NOT ONLY good for intermediates, but up through SUPER ADVANCED! The DVD allows you to pick which workout you want to do- from modified beginner, beg, int, advanced, and super advanced. It grows with you! I just hated my Winsor tape after a month or so, because she explains everything every time and I feel like it's wasting my time - not this one (that's why I originally said for intermediates, you need to know what you're doing ahead of time since they only explain the moves in the very basic set for beginners, and then only once)! It also has alternative moves for variety during some of the leg exercises (it shows another person in a smaller box in the corner of the screen doing different moves) so you can follow the other person during that time in the workout if you choose. I love variety! Their website is , but I ordered my DVD on amazon. Has anyone tried the Magic Circle one? It looks good but I haven't tried it.

OH My goodness...i'm going to add my $1...hehe.
i absolutely ADORE Yoga...we have this POwer Yoga @ the local YMCA, and i am in love w/ it.
The classes are monday and wednesday nights, and friday mornings @ 6...which i did this morning, and i'm so energized!
The PoWER part of it is *extremely intense, i can't wait to see major results! I already am improving, and i've only done it for a couple weeks. Me 'n sum girlfriends really get into it. I'd have to say it's the best thing for exercise i've done for a while...(except tennis, basketball 'n softball!)

If you've never tried Yoga...i DEFinately think you should try it someday!! Good luck to everyone!! ;)
p.s. exercising is amazing!!!

Another vote for yoga here... I take class once a week offered through the corporate wellness center I belong to (if they offered it more often I'd definitely be there). Unlike strength training or cardio training where you're pounding out reps and minutes, yoga definitely adds a mental/spiritual element. I always feel more centered and calm after class, but unfortunately, I take the spinning class immediately thereafter so it's fairly short-lived lol.

Edited to add: As a side note, the same instructor also teaches Tai Chi, which I also enjoy as a complement to the day's regular workout.

P.S. I've done the muscle shake too.

I have been thinking of joining a yoga class for some time, but I don't have time to waste in my fitness routine. Based on this thread, it is a very good workout! An add in my paper today said a new yoga center had just opened and had beginner rates. I am going to call. Thanks guys!!

i've been considering yoga too, maybe to do a couple times a week on my off days w/the strenth training.......i too will have to do it at home w/a dvd......i hope there is one for VERY beginners, lol

I haven't taken any yoga classes and probably won't anytime soon, but I do love doing yoga at home! I've picked up a DVD that I used to use all the time but now it's getting a little old so I might get a new one to change it up with. I love yoga because it truly is not only good for the body but the mind as well. After a nice session of yoga (or pilates- that's good too!) I always feel not only feel that I've worked my body, but I also feel much more relaxed. If I was angry or stressed before hand then usually it will have relieved at least a portion of that if not all of it. Yoga is definitely something that I recommend to absolutely everyone! Grab a dvd (or lesson if you feel ever so inclined) and give it a try! You won't be wasting all that much money if you don't like it AND you could always pass it along to a friend who might be more interested. I don't see why anyone wouldn't enjoy yoga. Work your body + relaxing at the same time = Happy me! :D haha! Have a great day everyone!

I did AM/PM Yoga for Beginners (Rodney Yee) and liked it a lot. The AM is basically 15 minutes of stretching, and meditation but wow do you feel good afterwards. The PM is 20 minutes and includes a real yoga workout. Emphasizes down dog, exalted warrior poses and transitions. Some of the stuff in the PM seemed a little bit beyond beginner level but I just did what I could and moved on. All in all a nice quick workout for those who'd like to see what yoga's about.
