Hello I just ended my second week of changing my way of living. I use to not care what I ate and drank on a daily basis. I'm 5'10" and was 298 lbs when I started. I stopped drinking and I'm eating 1500 to 1800 calories a day. My first week I walked 37 miles and lost 5.2 lbs. This week I ate the same 1500-1800 calories a day and I walked 44.5 miles. I weigh myself every Friday and today I weighed 292.8 which is the same as last Friday. I just don't get it. Any advice would be appreciated.

You may not always see a difference on the scale. If you are burning fat, but end up building muscle, you could even gain weight. My recommendation firstly is do not get discouraged. That is a lot of walking in my opinion and you should be happy for that accomplishment itself.

As for other advice, have you taken your measurements? If not, I recommend it. Even when you see no movement on the scale you could see a change in your measurements and that will help show you are making progress. Another thing you could do is take before/after/progress pictures (I have yet to do this myself...another "to do" for the weekend). With the pictures I suggest something snug fitting, to get a good sense of the changes. If you want you could take them in just your underwear. Also recommend taking it from different angles if you can, like front, side, and back so you can see all the changes.

Seems like you are doing well and on the right track, just keep it up and you will see results.

Hope that helps!

I agree with icychic, don't get discouraged. I just had my 3rd weigh in on my plan, and I had a huge loss in week 1, then week 2 only 1 pound, then today I'm down another 5. I always compare it to a house settling. The foundation is changing, let the bricks find their new placement. :) What I have found in the past, is that I will have a good week, then a low week, the low week usually makes me FEEL like I lost more, and often shows up much more on the measurements. :) Hang in there! Take it one weigh in at a time, but don't shoot yourself in the foot on those days - just turn to your support team - be it friends, forums, or family. :)

Thanks for the encouragement, I wasn't in the mood after my weigh in to go walking, but you both motivated me to go walk 6.9 miles. This forum is my support group. Im going to take my measurements today, that's a good idea. ty both. any other advice would be appreciated.

You are very welcome! We are happy to help where we can and offer what support we have.

Keep posting and I will do my best to keep up and offer whatever advice and support and motivation I can.

If you are looking for a workout challenge (friendly competition and motivation) there are a few I am doing.

One is the Offtober weight loss which can be found here
The other is a bodyfat % loss challenge found here
And the third is the IcyStarCloud Challenge which is a workout challenge rather than weight loss focused and is found here

Of course if you prefer you can simply do your own thing and keep posting on your diary :) Personally I think I need the motivation so I'm hoping these challenges will get me going and moving to help reach my goal.

The only other advice I can think of is do not beat yourself if you "fail". If you eat food you shouldn't eat, or don't workout when you should, or whatever the case may be. Forgive yourself, try to find out why you did what you did, but in the end move on and move forward or you will never go anywhere. We all have our ups and downs, the key is not losing focus and continuing to work towards your goal!

If you look at other people's diaries and the weight loss challenges, you will see that a lot of us have the same problem on a regular basis. Some days we have big losses, others very small or none, and on occasion, we put weight back on. I know I do. Even though I know I have done everything right, exercised, didn't go over my calories, the scales still say I put weight on.
That doesn't always mean you actually did though. For example, if you had something with a lot of salt the day before, it could be water retention. For me, retaining water can make a difference of up to 5 lbs. It doesn't mean that you put weight on, just that your body is holding on to water. I don't know your gender, but if you're female, hormones can cause temporary weight gain (mostly again, due to water retention). Time of the month puts between 3 and 5 lbs on me every single time. :(

Usually, when I have a couple of slow weeks, some really good ones follow. So I know it's temporary, and that encourages me to keep going. Taking measurements is a good idea as well, since it gives you something else to see some success than just to concentrate on the numbers on the scale. :)

Calories eaten always matter.
