Edit: Oops, the title should've been "A Dilema.."

Hi, thanks for checking this thread out. I'll start with some basic info about myself. My name's Eric. I'm 14 and 5'4". I weigh 223 pounds and I really need to lose weight. I'm sick of the ridicule I get from the kids at school. But it's hard for me to stay motivated. What makes it worse is when I tell my mom I'm trying to lose weight. Because than what happens is she shoves it down my throat and I get tired of it so I give up. So, what I'm looking to do is to eat healthy and work out without her knowing. Right now, I have around an hour of P.E. everyday at school and that's good for cardio. But I also need to grow some muscle. We don't have weights at our house so I don't know what to do for muscle. I'm also home alone for about an hour every day after school and that would be a great time to get any extra work outs done.

Hmm.. well I've kind of confused myself. Let me recap, I want to lose weight without my mom knowing that I'm trying to lose it. What are good things I can do at home for Cardio and Weight Training?

Any suggestions help. Thanks :D

Edit: Also, where are could places to measure myself? Like, around my stomach area? Upper arms? Etc..

Some great excercises for at home are calisthenics. They'll help with muscle as well as cardio. Calisthenics are excercises that you use your own body weight as your weights. When I trained with my old varsity team we did these a few times a week as a group, but everyday on our own.

Some items that you could do at home (when no one else is home if you don't want your mom to know that your working out):

-running stairs
If you have a few sets of stairs in the house (or even one flight) going up and down it many times. In my parents house I used to run the basement steps about 100 times (so 50 up, 50 down). Best thing is to step on every step, go quickly, but it's ok to go slower if you're getting tired. If you're getting tired, keep going, keep moving, once you finish you're break will feel so much more deserved. Don't be afraid to sweat!

-Pushups and situps
If you want to break up the stairs a little, after every 10 flights do 20 push ups, 20 sit ups (or crunches). Or do sets of them on their own. Don't underestimate them. They're awesome for building strength.

-Dips
Great for building arm muscle. Find a bench or chair that is sturdy, face away from it, put your palms on the seat with fingertips over the edge, and bend you knees using your arms to lower yourself slowly toward the ground (til your arms are at 90 degrees), then back up til they're fully extended, repeat several times.

Squats
Great for the quads (front thigh). With feet shoulder width apart bend your knees as if you are going to sit on a chair, and slowly rise again. It may help to extend your arms in front of you. DO NOT let your knees extend past your toes, as it could result in injury. Lower your butt. It's hard to get balance in the beginning, sometimes helpful to have a rail/table to rest a hand on (but not put weight on).

Calf Raises
Stand on a stair with your balls on the stair, and your heels hanging off. Raise up on your balls, then slowly lower. Repeat. If this gets easy, you can always hold something heavy to make it harder (textbooks are great).

All of these need to be done at a slow controlled pace. They won't be effective if you're using momentum to complete them. Also they're very customizable in that you can add more sets and reps and your body adjusts to them. You can also always add weight to make them more difficult too. Other exercises like chin ups are in this category too. You can just google calisthenic workouts and get all sorts of ideas. :)

Hopefully with time you'll feel comfortable enough to work out when your mom is home. But I know what it's like to have a mom like that. Mine was like that. I didn't want to work out around her..... eventually we did weight watchers together, and began working out together, and that helped. But I went for years only working out when no one was home!

Good luck, and keep it up. Best way to see results is to keep at it. The harder you work, the better you'll feel. Believe me. It may feel awful, and like you just won't make it, but if you keep at it, after your body has had a chance to catch it's breath, you'll feel great. Nothing like a good workout to build confidence.

Tams

Wow, awesome post Tams. Thanks :D About the stairs thing, we live in an apartment building and there are two flights of stairs. I may work up the will power to run up and down those but we'll see. As for the other excersises I'll try them out. The dips I've tried before, had to do them in P.E., those are HARD. I'll go look up calisthenic's right now. It sounds interesting. Thanks again.

Like I said, lots of great info on the net!

Apartment stairs are good. I used to live on the 17th floor. Took the stairs everyday! But I mostly ran stairs at the University's gymnasium.

Hope you found it useful, and that you find more useful info on the net.

Good luck!

Hmm, well I came up with a rough draft of a work out plan. What do you think? I based it off of what I feel I can do. If I find something is just too hard I'll lower the level. If it's too easy I'll increase it.

Workout Plan

Strength Training on Weekdays (Weekends if the time is found) -
Morning Light Training:
1) Start off with some leg and arm stretches.
2) 15 Squats
3) 10 Push Ups
4) 10 Sit Ups or Crunches
5) 30 Dumbbell Curls
6) 50 Bycicle Kicks
7) Stretch again.

Afternoon Heavy Training:
1) Start off with some leg and arm stretches.
2) 8 Stair Flights
3) 25 Squats
4) 8 Stair Flights
5) 15 Push Ups
6) 8 Stair Flights
7) 50 Dumbbell Curls
8) 8 Stair Flights
9) 100 Bycicle Kicks
10) 8 Stair Flights
11) 15 Calf Raises
12) 5 Dips
13) 20 Sit Ups or Crunches
14) Stretch again.

Nightly Quick Training:
1) Start off with some leg and arm stretches.
2) 5 Push Ups
3) 10 Squats
4) 5 Sit Ups or Crunches
5) Stretch again.

Cardio -
1) P.E. approximately one hour of cardio on Weekdays. Weekends off.
2)Gym approximately 20 minutes of cardio Friday - Tuesday. Wednesday and Thursday off.

Hey there! Thanks for sharing your story. I hear you about wanting your mom off your back. Sometimes people really don't how harsh they can be and negativity really is damaging to the motivation.

I think you have the right idea. Take advantage of school exercise and home exercise. I know how hard kids can be on overweight kids too.

Just believe in yourself! You can totally do this.

Thanks MissJellyBelly :) Yeah, kids aren't the nicest people. I make jokes too. It's just to make yourself feel better I guess. It's funny though, sometimes if my friends see that I'm getting upset, they'll try and make themself look better by saying stuff like, "I'm just messing with you" or "You don't even care, right?" I hate that one. Why wouldn't I care about my weight? *Duh*

Sorry your friends are harsh. Maybe you could get your Dr to talk to your mom. You need to lose weight to be healthy and live a long life. What mom doesn't want that for their kids? Do your parents need to lose to? Maybe it could be a family thing. You already got great suggestions on at-hime exercises. Maybe buy a video if you want a break from the routine for a few days that you could do in your hour alone.

You know, being overweight is a hard thing to deal with and to be impartial about. I think it is becoming more socially acceptable to make fun of overweight people because it is an epidemic in this country. It really hurts and it's hard for people who've never been overweight to know what it feels like to be the butt of a joke.

You'll never forget the ridicule, but it helps to use that energy to motivate yourself. I remember when I had lost a bunch of weight in the past, it was so nice to see my highschool friends. It was a great feeling to turn down the guys who used to make fun of me. I would never date any of them. I didn't forget.

Stay strong and keep going. You can do this! You really can.
