Sport I am so clueless it is frustrating!!

Sport Fitness
Hi guys, I am turning 24 this year during my life I never paid any attention at all to nutrition or health in general because I didn’t have much interest. I want to make baby steps and fully understand about nutrition and gym workout within 3 months, so I can get rid of my insecurities i have in this area.

Little about my past, I have trained before for a year or so but didn’t get much success except I lost 2 inches about 8 kilos worth of fat but didn’t gain much physical muscular muscle.

Here is my current status: I am 174cm, 88 kilos (lost 5 kilos) in little over 2 months.

My current goals – I am looking to lose bodyfat in my stomach and reshape my body into a muscular one. I am attending the gym 4 to 5 days a week with 3 day weights/cardio (2 hour) and 1 or 2 day cardio (1 hour). I was on Ultimate Nutrition Diet pills, but since yesterday I got recommended to take Iso Sensation – Ultimate Nutrition whey protein instead to tone up my body fat. I don’t have a diet plan, and I urgently need one (I read I need to take 5 small meals a day) I only take 3 big meals a day and sometimes I only take 2. I need a general diet plan so I can have something to stick to.

This is my usual daily intake, breakfast – I eat white bread with jam and peanut butter with milk, lunch – I eat wholemeal bread with chicken, lettuce, tomato, cheese with fruit or a steak sandwhich if I am not at school I eat whatever I get served usually soup with kimchi or other Korean stuff, dinner I eat whatever I get served or dine out with my gilrlfriend usually a pasta or steakhouse. I also plan to take whey protein at 7 or 8pm. I sleep 5 to 6 hours daily.

I never took in control of what I eat as you can see, I have no idea to be honest and don’t know what protein and carbohydrate is to make matters worse, and don’t know how much calories I consume.

On a good note, I have reduced my drinking by more than half since day 1 of training and smoking I have quit from yesterday using patches and i will keep to it so i can feel healthier not just look healthier, I cut out my junk food binge (but I still consume junk food casually e.g. once every 4 days or so) I am a moderately committed type who needs to achieve things within a certain time period or at least progress if not I will lose motivation and get demotivated,

Please help a poor sod out… and recommend me what I should do!!!

Hi there Redzone,
I've just joined this site myself. I've had a quick read through your situation and would be happy to help. It's really great to read that you have trained previously and had success in losing body fat, you should be proud of yourself, 8kgs even over a year is a good result. You do not want to lose too much at once, or not lose enough.
I got a little concerned when you said you're going to take a certain protein to tone up your body fat. Unfortunately, you cannot actually tone up body fat. It is a very common myth. If you are wanting a toned look, you will need to continue to decrease your body fat.
You've said you want to become more muscular, I have just written an article on my blog regarding peoples make-ups of slow and fast twitch fibres which can determine how successful you may be in building muscle bulk. But to know more, you would need to explain a little more about your gym routine and sets and reps etc. Because you may be doing the complete wrong about of sets, reps and load for what you're looking for.
Three or Five meals a day as long as they are relatively balanced. A lot of people believe five meals a day is a good choice because you consume smaller portions and therefore your stomach does not stretch as much and you will not consume as much.
Let me know a bit more about your routine and we'll have a look at some suitable exercises.
Otherwise, feel free to have a look at my blog, I've only started it, so it's a little dry.

If you're still after some valuable information, I gave some advice earlier, although pretty basic. As I said, I have just started my own blog, it's pretty basic at the moment. But if you're after some useful stuff, please drop by and even give me some more info, might be able to help you out with a plan... I'm going to be uploading some exercise videos soon also.
Hope all is going well.

trainer, thanks for the response. I will certainly keep a eye out on the blog you have, i started to educate myself reading articles on bodybuilding .com, i also have a personal journal going on, if you have a spare time to look at it

how long haave you been training for? if you have messenger please PM me if you could, if not i am cool with it.

Same boat as redzone but 39...

Hey fellas - thought I'd jump into this thread and perhaps get some advice from redzone also. I posted this am in the nutrition section, as I'm fairly clueless as well. Also much older - just turned 39. I feel like I put more effort in the gym then 95% of folks my age yet still have belly fat and am struggling to hold muscle.

I have been working out steady for 2+ years, though have maintained good shape throughout 20's and 30's. In past 6-7 months I've ramped up my exercise to 35-40 mins each of cardio and weight training 5-6 days a week every week. While I've gained some muscle and lost some fat, I'm not real happy with either. I thought going from 3 days of 30-40 min cardio/3 days of 30 min weights I'd see a big boost from the extra effort. I haven't seen the boost i expected.

I'm 5'6" 158 lbs. I was 163 lbs 6 months ago before my push. Since Jan 1 I've tried to watch my diet more, but it's been a slow weight loss. Essentially I'm eating bran flakes/oats/granola with skim milk, salad for lunch, snacking on fruit/nuts, and a reasonable dinner (chix/brown rice/veg). I work out first thing in am and feel hungry most of the day. Am I over focused on calories and not getting enough of something? My extra weight is right in the belly - not much but i want a flat stomach and I'm not there yet. I think 150lbs is where I need to be.

FInally, I'm not able/willing to spend more time in the gym. I just want to get more out of my workouts - hang on to more muscle and lose more belly fat. While my strength is increasing I'm not seeing much increase in size. I typically work 2 muscle groups per day doing 2 sets of 10-12 and 3 sets per muscle group. Mostly dumbells but i recently added resistance exercises using a band.

Any thoughts/advice would be great. I feel like I need to see some better results or risk losing motivation. Anything you got is great - thanks in advance.
