Sport hunger & exercise question here

Sport Fitness
Hi all. Here is my dilemma (for this week anyway):

When I first started eating properly I was able to maintain a 1200-1400 daily caloric intake. As I started to exercise regulary I found my appetite was difficult to control. I don't understand the physiology of why that occurs. Not that I am looking for a scietific answer here, but can anyone shed some light as to why that is and if that is normal. I feel like I am hungry all the time and it is frustrating.

I have to take a 4-6 week break from all exercise following surgery soon and am nervous as hell about gaining weight back and losing the muscle I have worked so hard to find. Is it correct to assume that my appetite SHOULD decrease with the fact that I won't be working out?

Sorry, I forgot to say that since July I am eating 1600-1800 calories daily.
