HR monitors / gps

Hey guys. I am thinking of buying a garmin forerunner 305 with heart rate for training. Does anyone have experience with this gps unit? Should I just go for a regular HR monitor?

Well I purchased one of these last week and it just arrived last night. I'll go for a quick run tonight to see how it works out. So far it looks pretty good with a lot of features. The watch is quite big in size and there does not seem to be an option to see your speed. I wonder if the foot pod accessory allows you to get this optoin. I can however see my pace in time per km , or mile. I thought the foot pod was just for running on the treadmill though.

Oh and i wanted to mention i bought this from costco.ca website. I saw it went on sale and bought it with the HR monitor for $199 cdn. These units are about $350 in a running store!

You can configure it to show whatever you want. You have to go into the setup and pick from the many options available. You can have 1, 2, 3, or 4 items displayed at once.

If you can't figure it out, I'll grab mine when I get home and tell you how to configure it.

Setup a free account at motionbased.com. That will give you more stuff to play with.

Does the 305 have a cordless transfer to your computer? ONe of them did and I thought that was super cool. I have a 201, which works fine but is still a bit of a dinosaur when it comes to the newer models

It's a GPS running watch. It measures how far you've run, pace, heart rate, elevation, you can save routes, compare your times, see what parts of the run you did well, where you were lagging, see how your performance responds to hills etc.

It's nice to not have to map out a course if you don't want. Just start running and turn around when you've run half your distance. REALLY nice when traveling

...Elevation does not appear to be accurate to me though. That's my only complaint

Yeah there is a model 405 which can do pretty much the same thing but i think it is smaller. This thing looks bulky enough on me i couldn't imagine a 100 lb chick wearing it.

Oh and to sparrow, this one has to be plugged in to transfer but the 405 does not.

I am going to ask Santa for a 305 Forerunner. Then, I'll use the Garmin with my cheapy Polar HRM and strap as they are not compatible (I'm told). On the bike, I'll wear both the Polar HRM and Garmin along with my Polar CS200 bike computer.

I'm corn-fused...the 305 comes with a HR monitor. Why use your polar with it?

I would use the Garmin for its GPS functions and the Polar wrist monitor because it is easier to read on the run for almost-50 yo eyes like mine, I am told. When on the bike, I would use the Polar strap with the Polar bike computer. It would be nice to be able to use 1 strap for all three units, but that is not to be, I think.

You can set the HR monitor to one of the big boxes of the display on this watch so it is much bigger. My 24 y/o eyes wouldnt be able to see the little hr status on the top either.

The Garmin HRM is an option. You can configure the display on the 305 to just about anything you want. If you want it to just display a giant HR, you can do that.

Check it out... You can have the quadrants be whatever value you want but you can also display 4, 3, 2, or just 1.

I messed up one of the images but you get the idea.

Oh, gotcha, I was blessed with excellent vision so I sometimes take it for granted

...I'm 33 and was recently tested at 20/10

Thanks, Tsi and Jaoust for that info. That definitely looks readable even on the run.

Gooch, dude, I had 20/15 up until age 37, so enjoy your few remaining eagle-eyed years:p
