I just started working out and eating right again I’m 23 years old 6 foot and 236 pounds right now got a short term goal (3-4 months) of 200 pounds and a long term goal of 170 (1 year). I have 2 questions. Is my goal unrealistic? Ad I’ve only been eating less and right and working out for 5 days and I think I’m seeing a difference is that dangerous or am I just doing good I haven’t weighed my self for 5 days I’m waiting until a week goes by so I can see a bigger number lost all at once and so im not playing the scale game everyday. Advice anyone? And im hoping staying on this sight will kinda keep me on track

welcome ape...

weighing in once a week, at the same time, is smart... i think the body fluctuates too much on a daily basis to get an accurate, and less frustrating reading every day...

Your goal? the medical profession says that 2 lbs a week is healthy to do... so your goal of losing 36 pounds in 4 months? Ithink that's fairly reasonable, but if you work out, take into consideration that muscle does weigh more than fat does, so you might want to use measurements as an accurate measure of what you are doing is working rather than a number on a scale...

good luck and welcome

Hello Ape.

Thirty six pounds in four months. Yes, it can be done - works out at 2 pounds per week. I recently lost forty pounds in that period. However, its right out there on the limits - you shouldn't really aim to lose more than two pounds per week, well, not more than that every week. As you said - try to avoid using the scales too often. I didn't use the scales at all for the first month. When I saw how much I had already lost - it gave me the buzz to go further.

Everyone is different - what works for someone, doesn't always work for others. I would recommend that you stop eating fast food, junk food - and even consider cutting right back on alot of processed foods. Start thinking about what you put into your body, what it offers you nutritionally, etc. Avoid fatty and sugary foods and drinks. You might find your body craving for the junk for a while - but I personally found that craving really diminishes after a few months.

DON'T SKIP MEALS! If anything, think about increasing the number of (smaller) meals. EAT BREAKFAST - it really is the most important meal of the day. Consider eating more fibre and combine it with drinking more water throughout the day. Enjoy more fruits and salads - but explore healthier dressings. Eat healthier leaner meats - fish, chicken breast (not the skin!), lean steak, etc

DON'T LOSE WEIGHT BY DIET ALONE! - Combine it with more activity and exercise, gradually enjoying life more and more - and you will do as you get fitter. See losing weight as the first target in a long term lifestyle change - aim to become a fitter person for life - not a temporary skinny fat person. This needs a change of self image - work on it!

Last of all, welcome to the site - consider opening an online diary in the diary section, and keeping a track of all of your weight, eating/drinking, exercise, and well - thoughts. Good luck with the journey mate - its hard at first, but get that confidence going and it gets easier.
