I track my food on SparkPeople and I've noticed that I'm always short on fat. I'm a vegetarian/almost vegan. I know nuts are good, but they're very high-cal and I can't stop myself when I buy em - I'm always thinking about eating them and eventually break down. What are veggie alternatives to nuts for getting good fats in my diet?

avocados are high in good fat, but also higher in calories than broccoli... but there's nothing wrong with that... how many calories a day are you on?

Between 1,200 to 1,500 depending on the day. I could work in half an avocado (if I can find them here...produce selection is terrible). Thanks!

you could also use peanut butter or some of the other nut butters...
or portion out the nuts when you buy them - I don't trust myself with an entire can of almonds so as soon asi get them home - I'll put them into 1 ounce packages using ziplock snack size bags - and I know exactly how many I can have....

Olives, olive oil, canola oil, peanut oil, cashews, almonds, peanuts, and most other nuts, avocados, soybean, safflower, fish oil... there are more. There are endless possibilities.

Do you include much soya in your diet? It's a good source of polyunsaturated fats, including omega 3 and 6. It's also a vey good protein source.

When I started coming to this site I was worried that I wasn't getting enough of the esential fats and started looking into it. It turns out that by using soya milk on my cereal every day, I'm already getting a wide variety of nutrients that I thought I was short of. I've just started drinking a glass of it later on in the day to make sure I'm getting enough.

If it's monounsaturated fats you're worried about, olive oil is a very good source of those. I use good quality extra virgin olive oil in cooking.

Nuts, nut butters, anything thats remotely sweet and yummy in that domain tends to be a trigger food for me. So, I depend on olive oil for my fat intake- just throw a teaspoon or two in your usual salad dressing. I try not to consume any refined sugars so I avoid dressings and use a combination of olive oil, balsamic, lemon juice and oregano. Yummy yummy!

Thanks for all the advice. I found some cheap, unsalted brazil nuts online (need more selenium too) - I'm going to take mal's advice and sort them as soon as they come.
