Step 1:
Cut out junk food as much as possible and eat foods that are and always have been available in nature: Meat, Fish, Eggs, Dairy, Veg, Fruit, Grains, Pulses, Oils, Water. Eat foods as close to nature as possible. You SHOULD NOT NEED ANYTHING ELSE.
Step 2:
Experiment with macronutrient ratios. The key word is experiment. Some people suit eating high animal product diets, some would just feel sick doing this. Some people are better with a vegge diet, some people would just be bloated and tired doing this. Find out what works for YOU.
Step 3:
Count your calories. Calorie counting is not the be all and end all of nutrition but it sure as hell is vital. Find out what your ideal intake should be (usually around 1500-2500 women and 2000-3000 men) and try and stick to it. However, dont think that bcos you are eating the right amount that you can eat crap- remember step 1.
Step 4:
Experiment with meal times and portion sizes. I personally find the warrior diet (undereat in the day, feast at night) works for me but other people are better off grazing all day. Find out what routine gives you the most energy and keeps you full and satiated without having to overeat. Again, the key word is experiment.
Step 5:
Make sure you are getting your micronutrients. This could mean varying the fruit and veg you eat, taking certain multivitamins (if your F+V arent of high integrity you will probably need to do this) and if necessary see a dietician.
Step 6:
If you overeat or are never full, ask yourself why this is. It is almost certainly gonna be linked to some sort of fear/anxiety/depression/anger disorder. Food is satiating and relaxing (just like sex, it has to be or we wouldnt be attracted to it and we would perish as a species) so if you are always hungry then you might find that it is bcos you dont feel relaxed/loved/happy etc. and are eating to fill this hole (im starting to sound like Ritchie Simmons).
