Sport how much is too much protein, is there such a thing?

Sport Fitness
Is there anything wrong with consuming massive amounts of protein? Anything unhealthy or bad about doing that?

Today I had 281 grams and i'm 150 pounds for example...

Well depends if you mind that most of it turning into fat, excreeted in the urine, putting excess load on your kidneys, water loss.

281 are you kidding, how can you possibly or want to consume that much, rediculous i say!

rediculous i say!

LMAO, you sounded like such an old English gentleman saying that

OP - You'll get loads of different answers, the science geeks will say there's no use in more than 0.8g per lb of body weight, others, like me, will say 1-1.5g per lb. But either way you're probably having a little too much at the moment, you could drop down to 150g and not be missing out on anything

I agree with the others.

If you consume protein in excess of what your body needs for normal daily maintenance caloric and normal protein needs, the extra protein gets converted and stored as fat. At your weight, 150 grams is more than enough.

btw - where did you get the idea you need so much protein anyway ?

Wouldn't any calories you eat over your maintance get converted to fat regardless of if it's protein, carbs, or fats?

I am talking about if you stay within your maintance calories... is there too much protein then?

the 281 that I had the other day wasn't normal for me, I usually get 150-180 or so.

yes...

even if you stay within your overall maintanance calaries, to omuch protein will ultimately be fat. Because the body cant store nor want to so its eliminated..

rrrrreally? well that's interesting..

Well how much is too much then? I guess while we're talking about it, how much is too much fat and carbs as well?

You put excess load on your kidney. Your body doesn't store protein, so it flushes unused AA. You might store extra fat, also.

I don't play around with excessive protein and excessive kidney usage. Now, I'm not about to say that it's true, but I don't want to gamble on it and then later on down in life have some kind of problem with my kidney. You only got two, so you might as well play it safe than sorry.

Just consume about .8g to 1g of protein per pound of body weight, and I think you'll be fine.

EDIT: LOL, I put liver instead of kidney for some reason. Sorry.

Yup.

As a general rule, any calories ' in excess ' of what your body needs will get stored as fat - doesn't matter if the excess comes from protein, carbs, or fats

To add muscle, there is no evidence to show that you need any more than .8 grams of protein per pound of bodyweight - so taking in 1 gram of protein per pound of bodyweight is enough ( and likely more than you need ).

Besides, weight training and hard cardio primarily use carb based energy - so, you want the majority of your calories to come from carbs.

One possible approach......

1. Figure out your ' daily maintenance calories ' ( depending on your goals ).
2. Figure out what the calorie equivalent of approx. 1 gram of protein per pound of bodyweight is.
3. Target your fat intake to 25% - 30% of your ' daily maintenance calories '
4. Subtract the fat and protein calories calculated above from your ' daily maintenance calories ' and you're left with a ballpark estimate of the carb calories you need.

....keeping in mind, that these are just estimates only and and you're just an average gym rat, so don't get too caught up in all the detail by expecting exact BMR calcs, exact activity level cals, re-adjusting calories day to day by following zig zag diets etc. etc.

We all need protein regardless whether we train or not; however, 281 grams for 150 lb person is, in my opinion, far too much. Your body will be better served with proper nutrient ratios.

I suggest as well to reduce it to at minimum of .8 per lb of body weight, and add in some complex carbs.

So, with the information provided by the members, what are your plans?

Remember, its actually the proper circumference of nutrients that support muscle growth, and not only protien.

Best wishes to you!

Here is a pretty good article (and more) explaining protein, protein requirements as well as good sources of . Maybe this will help explain and answer some of your questions.

yes...

I don't see how this is correct. if you are under your maintenance calories, but over your protein limit the extra protein does not get converted to fat, but gets converted to energy for your body to function. If he was over his calorie limit, then yes, but under, no.

If one is in DEFICIT of calories from their personal MT Line, and ALL those calories are from Protein-(hypothetically speaking), BELIEVE ME.......you gonna lose weight.......EVEN IF.....you consume to much protien over what you body needs.......BOTTOM LINE.

Lets say 1500c all from protein sources, and the MT line is 2000. Result in terms of putting things equal on a HEALTHY person: WEIGHT LOSS.

Its nearly impossible to stay exactly at the MT LINE; however, lets say the person did.

One is saying if I theoretically eat at the MT line and consume too much protein, and will eventually, given enough time, get fat. This is HAWG WASH.

------>Laws of energy balance cannot be beat<---------------------

EDIT:

This is a hypothetical situation, I dont recommend over consuming protein, as IT CAN provide adverse HEALTH effects; however, this DOES NOT mute my point on the POWER of the ALMIGHTY CALORIE.

AT the MT LINE, (hypothetically speaking) all energy needs are met, and if protein (and the comounds that get together to make it) are over consumed it will be converted to a source of fuel, and therefore, there is none left over to store, lol.

If one is in a surplus on the energy equation, then I would tend to agree.

Yeah some of it will be used for energy. The energy being utilised because of the defecit will be comeing from fat and amino acids from muscle.

You cant store amino acids right, so the excess from the meal will be excreeted, used as energy, and converted to fat (which will then be used for energy).

And if someone did do what chillen describes above, not only would there be adverse short term effects but fatal long term effects too.

If you aren't that low below your maintenance, I don't understand why amino acids would begin to be used as energy, they are only converted to energy when the body is in starvation mode no? I'm thinking that the body would something similiar to a keto diet, where instead of burning fat for energy, it burns all the protein.

/me shrug

Yeah thats right amino acids are primarlarly used in exceptional circumstance, considering there not suppose to be used for energy and play many vital roles in the normal functioning of our body. for that reason itself, i think in regard to your last sentence if i intepret right, doesnt exist.

Really, why not? Protein is a nutrient that can be converted into energy just as fat and carbs, why wouldn't the body convert it all and run off it?
