How Much Exercise is Needed?

Hullo. New here. :)

I just wondered how much exercise would be necissary for me to lose weight. :)

Basically, what I do now is... I like to walk/run my dog around the neighborhood at night. It's relaxing. But I'm so busy with school work I sometimes don't have time. I've been doing curl ups because I want my tummy to be smaller. Hah. And I ride horses a few times a week, which is my main motivation to lose weight. I really am wanting to do hunter jumpers and I want to lose weight for that.

Also. I tend to snack too much. And, yuh know, it's hard not to. Is there any way to snack some and still lose weight. My goal is, I guess, at least 20 pounds.

Anywho. Any advice would be great!

Depends on how much you eat is how much exercise you need.
If you eat say 1000 calories more than you need you are gonna have to jog for 2 solid hours to burn the extra off, plus another hour to get some loss.

Thanks mucho. Haha. I think whenever I feel like snacking is when I'm bored and no one is around. So instead of eating I think I'll just go have a jog with the dogs. :)

Good idea!

And your dogs will love you even more! Much more fun for the pooch to run with you than watch you snack. I have yet to meet a dog that wasnt happier the more running he/she got in ech day.

Wish I was a dog....

yeps having a dog will give u a lot of motivation to exercise! in the past when i had a dog i'l take it out for a walk every evening around the neighbourhood =) and i think to lose weight u shouldn't stick to the same exercise regime for too long.. maybe like run this week den cycle another wk, something like that.. you have to like 'surprise' your body so that it doesnt get used to ur exercise regime.. hope u get what i mean..

'Curl ups' - i take it you mean crunches for your abs.

Sorry, but they will not assist you one bit in getting your 'tummy smaller'

Doing an exercise to 'get rid of the fat' around that area - so situps for your stomach, running for fat on your legs or doing weights with your arms to get rid of fat on them - does not exist.

When you use your muscles to do something (such as exercise - cardio, weights etc) they require energy. To get the energy, an option is to break down fat (the required action) but your body is very clear and will break down fat from stores ANYWHERE on your body...

So if im sprinting down a road and go for an hour (which i cant do by the way) Im using the muscles in my legs mostly to do the running and thats where the energy is needed. After the run, my fat stores will be lower - but the fat that has been reduced could be on my legs, tummy, arms, ass - ANYWHERE basically...

So, if you want a smaller tummy, it will naturally reduce along with the rest of the fat stores elsehwere on your body as you do exercie :)

^ Cheah. That stinks. But I'll keep doing the curl ups because they are funnnn. Haha. And I've improved my nightly curl ups from 25 to 40. I want to be able to do 100 by next year, I guess. ;D

Walking, running and cycling with your dog - it worked for me! Ok, I also joined a gym and started weight training, but otherwise, most of my exercise has involved my dog - its sort of an unspoken contract - we keep each other fit. I started out walking a puppy - then as he grew into a young husky, we started running (I run him once or twice per week, harnessed to him via a canicross belt), and just recently, I have had to swap to bicycle in order to give him the run that he needs (attached via a Springer dog-bicycle attachment). Keeping a grown husky fit was one of my motivations to get fit - and I lost over 50 pounds.

By the way - you do know that those curl ups alone wont make your tummy smaller don't you? As is stated frequently on here - you can't spot reduce fat on any part of your body. You have to reduce your body-fat percentage as a whole, and that is done by reducing calorie consumption to a sensible level below weight maintenance level, and by increasing activity such as by exercising.

Good luck with the weight loss and animals :)
