how much can one work out?

Can a person work out one muscle on Saturday, take a day off, then work out a different muscle on Monday?

You could do it that way, I wouldnt recomend it though. By the time you worked your way around to the same muscle again it would have atrophied so much it would require a lot of extra workout time to recover enough to make a possitive influence. I would say work out all of your body in a two day period. For instance legs, back, and abs one day. And chest, biceps, and triceps the next day. or whatever you feel comfortable with. This is just my opinion though. I think one muscle every other day is just to little. even if you worked it out intesly its just not a good system to go by. well hope i helped.

I appreciate the input, thanks! However, i have heard that big muscles (ex: pecs, thighs, back) take 5 to 7 days to regenerate... makes me wish I was Wolverine with the healing factor. So i made up this kinda schedule:

Monday - pecs + triceps
Tuesday - Abs
Wednesday - Biceps + deadlifts
Thursday - Abs
Friday - Shoulders + squats + triceps
Saturday - Abs
Sunday - start the program all over again with Pecs

Now each really big muscle has 5 days to heal. For example, using this schedule I have 5 days to heal my pecs (tues - sat) yet I work unrelated muscles and make them stronger. If this sounds good, lemme know.

In my opinion, there's no way a muscle will atrophyif you work it out, rest a few days, then work it again. it can only get stronger (provided your nutrition is right).

Id recommend you do whatever works for you. If your muscles are still sore, then by all means give them 5 days to recover. A couple of years back i only had time to go to the gym once a week. A lot of bodybuilding fanatics said i was wasting my time, but I still got a big improvement from it.
