How many minutes to rev up metabolism?

Hi,

I am wondering if anyone knows how many minutes it takes to rev up the metabolism. What I am thinking is doing 1-5 minutes of walking/dance many times a day if it is worth the extra calorie loss. My thought is if I can rev it up and keep it revved up for a while, I would have increased loss.

What is interval training? How many minutes do people do.

Thanks!!

I don't know the answer to this, but it's a great question, I'd like to know that two.

I believe interval training is where you walk, jog, then run, in intervals. Like on a track. I used to have to do it at school. When you reached the first marker you jogged to the next, then ran to the next, walked to the next... etc. I cant remember the exact times but I know that the jogging was the longest stretch with the running and walking sections a lot shorter.

Not something I'd be too eager to do again but everyone's different. :)

It takes between 20 & 30 mintues for the body to stop burning carbs and start burning fat when you start excercise. If your goals are to loose bodyfat then you need to be doing cardio for atleast that amount of time.

I think there's no better example than what sprinters do. If you compare marathon runners to sprinters, you'll see that sprinters out muscle marathon runners any given day.

You'll also see that sprinters have really good muscle definition and minimum fat...that's because of their training. Their metabolism is just so revved up all the time like a car engine ready to drag race, fat doesn't even have a chance to build up.

You can 'simulate' what sprinters do by using HIIT (high intensity interval training). There are many variations of it...but what I do and what works best for me is:

1 minute sprint
1 minute jog

I do this on the elliptical trainer so that it's safe....it's not so safe to do on a treadmill if you ask me :)

 I have NO idea how you can do that on an elliptical trainer, but whatever works for you!

I don't think I could do this, as I find jogging really hard as it is. Maybe when my fitness levels increase a bit more.

I do plenty of short bursts of excercise though as long as proper gym sessions.

(Btw thanks to fms for the reply -good to know.)
