Sport How Many Calories A Day?

Sport Fitness
Well, I am going to start CAREFULLY watching what I eat. I don't really have a clue as to what to look for. I know a lot of it is currently debated about what you should look for when "dieting." Only I am hoping it isn't going to be a "diet" for me, but I hope for it to be a lifestyle adjustment.

I know I am going to overall try to eat better: veggies, fruits, lean meats (chicken and turkey)...I don't do fish or seafood so that is out of the question...and I am going to avoid processed/fried foods as much as possible. I don't know what to look for when looking at food labels...calories? carbs? sugars? fat? Help!! I just want an overall healthier lifestyle. I want to avoid the fad diets as much as possible.

Another question I have is: how many calories a day is a good amount for me to consume? I know this question gets tricky, but any help would be appreciated... I think I am actually UNDEReating (mostly because I am a poor college student), but I am still overweight...? I know it slows down your metabolism and all, but GEEZ!!

I don't know what one needs to calculate how many calories a day I need to consume, but I am 20 years old, 5'3", 158-160 pounds, and I exercise little because I 1) Work full time for the State (in an office), 2) Attend evening/night classes immediately after work until about 8 or 8:30, then 3) I study and do homework until I go to sleep (which is about 12:30)...Then I get to wake up at 5:15 am and do it all over again! Ahhhh help!

You're right that it is tricky. There are loads of calorie calculators out there and diets that state how much you should eat. The thing is, there are MANY factors to consider that even calorie calculators don't take in to account. When I assist people with nutrition I ask LOADS of questions so that I can be sure that what I'm recommending is going to be helpful, and not harmful.

I think the first thing you should do is use a program like to determine how many calories you are eating now. It will also tell you how many carbs, protein and fats you are eating now. This will give you an idea of where you're doing well and where you could improve.

Please let me know if I can help you!

A rule of thumb some people have is BWx12. Obviously, it's more complicated than that, but you can go from there and readjust. :)
