Everything depends on your current physical condition. You should run the longest as you can and assess what you are capable of. Afterwards, try to go jogging regularly and push yourself a bit more every time.

Don't forget to stretch before and after every single run, it helps against cramps and injuries.

Actually, stretching doesn't prevent injuries and the evidence on it preventing cramps is debatable.

google C25k, a good starting program for jogging, it moves at a good, but doable pace for most people. I just came in from doing week week 7 day 1 and I'm feeling good.
