How long does it take for muscle to go away?

My plan is to workout for four months straight. I know that I will get alittle bigger seeing how I am using supplements and I plan to workout hard. My only concern is that after the 4 months, I am going on vacation for the entire summer and won't be around a gym. I have a feeling that my body will go back to the way it is. Is this true?Is there anyway to prevent it?

You will experience atrophy and that is inevatable. What you can do it perform bodyweight exercises and keep your nutrition as good as possible. over the time you are away. Muscle wasting varies from person to person.

My old football coach used to tell us during summer break, 2 weeks of inactivity can undo two months of training.

While not completely accurate, muscle atrophy occurs at a much faster rate than muscle hypertrophy when physically inactive. You best bet is to do what you can, with cardio and body weight resistance training to maintain as much as possible.

Portable equipment

Hi, you may want to checkout suspension trainers. Lifeline USA sells a very inexpensive one and FitnessAnywhere.com sells a much higher quality one (and higher price). I have used the Fitness Anywhere's TRX suspension trainer and i love it! I train clients with it as well and I guarantee you can get in an amazing workout no matter what level you are at. Enjoy your summer vacation, I'm jealous!

I dont really care about strength, I just don't want to lose alot of size

Yeah, you'll lose more size than strength I think... that's how it use to be for me when I took the summer's off.

I would try to keep training over the summer somehow, I regret stopping for the summer when I was in school.

well I am skinny right now, so if I workout and get bigger, and stop working out after that, will I return to my original skinny self. This is my main concern.

Definitely. It's possible to maintain degrees of strength without size, and without weights to continue with a hypertrophic training regiment, it's going to be difficult to keep the size on there.

Quite frankly though, I think you should be more concerned about strength because it is applicable to daily life and overall health, but that's just me.

Since you won't have access to a gym or any equipment, I'd also look into plyometrics: ExRx.net Power Training Exercises: Olympic Syle Weightlifts and Plyometrics. Great power and agility training exercises that will help with overall physical training and strength and may help you maintain some moderate size.

I've heard afew people say that once you get to about 2 weeks of being stale, the muscle is dripping away by then.

I mean I wont even be at a hotel, I will be backpacking through japan. Will doing exercises that use my body be good such as push-ups and sit-ups keep me fit?

You can maintain fitness with body weight resistance exercises, calisthenics, and cardio.

suspension training

Look into the Lifeline USA suspension trainer or the TRX suspension trainers. They are super light and portable. The TRX is apparently used by the Navy as they need to be able to get in workouts no matter where they are, or so I read. You can throw it over a thick tree branch and get in an amazing workout. I don't work for them or sell them however I am preparing to become a TRX reseller because I believe they are great tools (for the sake of full disclosure).

Therabands

just bring a heavy duty theraband for your vacation. You can do just about any exercise with those, your imagination sets the limits
