Well i'm new to the whole weight loss/gym scene so sorry if i sound ignorant.

Height : 5'10"
Weight : 210
Age : 20
Goal : Get to around 160 lbs

Since i came back to college after winter break last week this is what i've been doing.

Morning : 1 egg, fried with little, sometimes no oil
After Classes : Sometimes nothing or just something to snack on, whatever is in the apartment really, nothing bad like cookies/chips/etc...
After That : I goto the gym, and use the bicycle machine for about 1hr +/- 10 mins at about 140-170 bpm.
After Gym : Salad mix with chopped up baked chicken breast and maybe 1-2 tablespoons of ranch dressing.

Any hints/tips/suggestions as to this? I really dont know how much calorie wise this is because i havent taken the time to look into it. Please let me know what i should or shouldnt eat and when to do so. Thanks :)

I'm quoting Maleficient when I say this, and his advice has really worked for me:

Make lifestyle changes, otherwise all the weight you're working hard on losing now will come back quickly after you lose it all, maybe even a bit more.

If you think you're going to be eating that same diet for the rest of your life, do it, but really I think the best way is to make small changes to your diet (I.E. cut out fried food and snacks/sweets as well as fizzy drinks) one at a time until you eventually phase them out... for life.

Best of luck mate, I'd read the nutrition stickies too, they helped me a lot.

so pretty much if i keep up working out then it wont really matter what i eat once i lose the amount of weight i'm looking to lose?

Is this a day's worth of food? It doesn't seem like enough to me.

Also are you lifting? More muscle helps fat burn more quickly.

You need more veggies and fruits and whole grains. Your diet is not balanced. And I'm not into the whole egg thing, but one egg?

How about oatmeal, ww toast? fruit?

Also don't forget the water.

I'd recommend keeping a log of what you are eating in a given day. Do this for a week and then make another post. If you are eating two half meals, you are not eating enough.

Also, calories are very important. caloric surplus/deficit drives long-term weight gain/loss.

Okay first things first now that you have made up your mind to lose weight get healthy you need to put some thought into it. You are excercising that is great but nutrition plays a great part too in losing weight and the key here is balanced nutrition. In your post you said
After Classes : Sometimes nothing or just something to snack on, whatever is in the apartment really, nothing bad like cookies/chips/etc...
when you take this kind of approach and I am speaking from experience you soon find out that you are not getting anywhere; planning and knowing what you are going to eat is the key; also when you plan you will make sure you shop for the right stuff; I plan my meals over the weekend and then on Sunday go and get all the stuff for the week based on my list; this way I know what exactly I am going to eat and this helps me be on track.

Just excercising is not enough to meet your goal; something is better than nothing ofcourse but finally success is achieved with right nutrition and excercise; and as others already pointed out does not look like you are getting the required calories for the day based on what you have posted up there; I would encourage you to navigate around the foroumn and read all the threads on nutrition and come up with something that works for you; remember it is not a diet it is a lifestyle; so it should be something that fits your lifestyle and not something which you do to loose weight and then when you get back to your lifestyle it all comes back again this I am speaking from experience.

You can't afford to make all the mistakes by yourself as life is too short it is better to learn from the mistakes of others.....:) right....

Ok, so then, can someone help me come up with a plan? Most of the stuff i find on here isnt really specific enough for my tastes. Unless i just havent been searching for the correct terms. If someone wants to tell me what i should buy, what i should prepare, when to eat, i'll follow as closely as i can. Like i said i'm new at this, so i dont mind doing what people tell me as long as they make sense. Thanks for the replies tho :) Makes me happy to know you guys care about anyone who posts.

I like just about everything, some stuff i absolutely despise, like tomatoes, unless its sauce or ketchup etc... I Love spicy food, meat, and the like. But yeah if you all have suggestions as to what i should eat and when please let me know, i can get accustomed to it since its a necessity. I am a Muslim ( islam ) so just stay away from things i cant have ;).

Thanks again for the help, i really appreciate this, i cant wait till these pounds start to slowly melt off.

Okay no problem; I am an Indian so I know your love for spicy food; so hear are a few suggestions which should not be that hard to make:

Tandoori Chicken:

You get the Tandoori chicken masala in most Indian stores; use the dry one the one which has oil and masalas in it has too much fat; get the masala; skinless chicken legs or breasts; marinate it with the masala with non fat yogurt and lemon juice for abt 30-45 mins. Pre heat the oven to 350 and then put the chicken on a baking tray. Line the tray with alumunium foil and spray a little bit of pam spray to keep the chicken from sticking .

Check on it after 15 mins turn it around and once done take it out and enjoy. I generally have this with Salad or stir fried veggies which are easy to make too. I get the frozen bag of veggies and put it in a pan with some garammasala; salt saute them. You get your protein and veggies and it is filling too.

I marinate chicken and then take it out of the marinate and store it in zip lock so all i need to do is just pop it in the oven. I just need to remind myself to take the packet out from the freezer and put in the fridge for it to thaw before I am home for dinner....

You can use the same masala for fish too; I love salmon and it is also good for you.

Then there is Chick peas; get a can of chick peas the low sodium ones; drain the water put them in a pan cook them a bit then chop onions' green chillies; cucumbers; and mix them with the peas and sprinkle some salt and chat masala and you have a healthy snack which has protein/fibre and is tasty.

Also; you can get some thinly sliced chicken breasts the one which cook u very fast saute some onions in 1/2 tbs of olive oil put some chilli powder; garam masala; salt; some MDH chicken masala;once the onions are sauted you can add the thinly sliced chicken into it. This cooks up very fast. once cooked you can use some salsa; you can make it or get it from the store spread it on a whole wheat tortilla; and put the chicken you cooked on it roll it up and you have a tasty and spicy wrap; you can also get creative and add fresh veggies along with the onions and masalas; this is really yummy and filling.

Also, the simplest of all is dal; take toor dal; in a pressure cooker; add some salt and turmeric powder and 1 spoon of Sambar masala with water and vegetables of your choice; once you hear the whistle turn it off and enjoy. You can also add some Sambar masala to it to make it more yummier......You can eat this with brown rice it is really tasty or by itself.

You can PM me for any other recipies but I would suggest giving this a try. You will have to put some effort in order to eat healthy and loose weight.

Thanks for the recipe :). I guess i'll find random things to pick up for everyday eating. College doesnt leave much time to cook unless its a weekend.
