How does equipment determine calories burned?

Title says it all. How does exercise equipment such as treadmills or exercise bikes determine how many calories the user has burned? Does it ask for the persons weight to be put in or does it just guess how many is burned by a set weight?

Usually your weight and age is entered and determines how many calories are lost by the speed/incline, etc it is doing - not really all that accurate or special by any means.

Sometimes it takes the number of repetitions like on some rowing machines. Others might ask age weight gender and then calculate the answer very roughly. I believe some can see how many reps you have done per min or somthing then work it out.

They are good rough counters but half an hour of exercise comes out at about 300calories on the machines.

I agree with that, and that surfers are hot ;)
