how do you deal with wrong kind of foods at home?

Hi all,

I am a new person on this forum and have been following the threads for sometime now....great support forum!!

I have been dealing with my weight for almost all my life now ( am 27 years), and have found success recently in reducing 44 pounds over a period of 2 years while I was away from home ( I am an Indian, was in the US for 2 years), and still have at least 35 pounds more to go. I came back home in January for 4 months, and in just 2 months I have gained back 8 pounds. I see it as a setback and feel awful about myself for not being able to do what I really want to do. I exercise hard ( hit the gym everyday for 1-1.5 hours), but my biggest problem is the excessive amounts of "bad" food at home. It's nearly impossible to make my folks understand my situation and convince them of not buying energy dense, fried and sweet stuff. At any given time, there is at least 3-4 different variety of sweets at my home ( most of which I like). After resisting the temptation for the whole day, I usually give in at night. I have some relationships in my family which are very sensitive ( eg. my sister in law) and I cannot ask them to not bring such foods home. Is there anybody else in a similar situation? How do you deal with the temptations at home?

Lucky...you get to eat Indian cuisine, mmm. Umm, anyway, everybody has their own way of beating their cravings and temptations, so you're going to have to find something that works for you.

Personally, I just try to snack on something healthy when I get a craving. Eat a piece of fruit or something and see if that makes your craving go away. Also, I get cravings and temptations a lot when I'm bored. So, if you find yourself getting a boredom-related temptation, try going for a walk. Going for a walk actually redistributes your natural body sugars throughout your body and helps to tame your hunger. I learned that in culinary school during my nutrition class. It's been helpful.

hmmmm....thank you ChefChi Town. will try eating a fruit for a snack. The fact that walking redistributes your natural body sugar is new to me....sounds good...except for that it's crazy sunny and hot in India and I can't just go walk anytime...good advice though-I will try climbing stairs. Thank You.

There is a lot of unhealthy food in my house... cake, pies, candy, poptarts, etc... The way I cope is to not have a single bit of the unhealthy food. For me, I know that if I give in to just one bite, it will quickly turn into more. It drives some of my friends/family crazy that I won't try their sweets, but I have to do what works for me. I would rather not know how good the cake is - then it is easier to say no. But, like Chef said, each person has their own way :)

Good Luck

My body was diagnosed with T2 diabetes approx 13 months ago. To keep my body's BG numbers under control TODAY, my body is on a very strict diet. For example: NO process grains, very little whole wheat grains, NO Sugar loaded items, more "real" meats, max 2 oze "real" cheese per day, NO tropical fruit, very little northern North Amercian fruit (like berries), much more veggies. etc. etc. Complete 180 degree change from my previous diet - in order to keep my body's BG numbers under control. For my other family members, they have "normal bodies". Thus, their pancreas can still process the "typical" North Amercian diet - that's adverstised every day in newpapers, TV and other ads. Ya. The typical 4 times more carb, 4 times more fat and absolute junk food items their body doesn't need. Our North Amercian folks publish "recommended food guides" yet fail to promote "proper eating" across the front line "average person" levels. Most "average folks" on the streets cannot even name off the major food groups and what their "recommended" serving sizes should be. Yes. These folks are often specialized in high tech, in trades and know how to read/write. Very educated folks. They even know the war of 1812 but do not know how to properly feed their own body. Scary thought. Sorry to mumble on... Definate sore spot with me...

If certain food items at home make your body sick (or allow it to gain weight), simply say NO. NO to chips. I'll have a few carrots or celery stick instead. No to fat, I'll remove the skin before eating chicken, etc. etc. If you vision bad food items as beeing "battery acid" to your body, you will pick different food items. Works for me....

hey dwwise....i have tried that "not a single bite" before and that's exactly what works for me...thanks for reminding me of it again....now that I know that there are more people following that 'crazy' concept, it would be easier for me ( i had begun to think of myself as a control freak...but hey...that's what works!) Thank you so much for your reply and support.

Spike- sorry to hear about your diabetes. I have a very strong family history of diabetes- another reason why I badly want to loose weight :(. I understand your frustration and have felt it a lot of times myself...why put so much salt into everything and then cry about a hypertension pandemic??? I totally agree with you on the unhealthy north american diet. Bowls full of chocolates and candies at the hospital reception tables didn't make me very happy either!! the bigger problem is your own home ( just now my brother asked me to go get some bread, full of carbs and oil for dinner from the grocery store....and i refused :banghead:). neways...if you all are doing it, I can too. i am definitely following dwwise's advice of not taking a single bite.
Thank you for your support guys:grouphug:

I ask that if it HAS to be in the house that it stays out of sight. If it doesn't stay out of sight I leave and come back when I think it's gone.

phew! I can't ask for keeping food out of my sight....my folks absolutely do not understand...nevermind...I am trying to follow dwwise's advice of not taking a single bite....still not 100% successful, but a lot better than before

what I do is that I simply don't buy or have temptations at home.
I know it find drastic but if I know it will be hard to avoid not eating chips or ice cream I just don't buy it and I surround myself instead with fresh fruits, veggies, skinned milk, whole grain bread etc.
if you live with other people it is tougher because other people have other diets as well. request if they can avoid junk food for a while or buy small portions and eat those apart from you.
when I am at home I hate that my brother always has oreos and such. I am week when it comes to cookies and having them around 24-7 didn't help.
thankfully he has a belly now, hah! and they removed all forms of junk food :p haha

Try chewing gum, Pooh, and/or drinking water. It's hard to eat junk food when your mouth is full of gum and water.

If you are ultra-talented, as I am, and can manage gum, water, and yummy bad food all at once, find something to do with your hands instead of shoveling food into your mouth--er, I mean eating. Knit, crochet, write letters, dig out your old crayons and coloring books. Keeping both your hands and your mouth occupied will mean you can't possibly eat bad stuff.

Also be sure you are getting plenty of fiber (to keep you feeling full) and that you keep healthy treats around for yourself. That way, when everyone else is eating some wonderful goodie, you can have one, too, only yours will be good AND good for you.

I'm with some of the others... I think if you have some of your own healthy snacks that taste yummy, when you get the urge swoop some of them up! Resisting temptation is not easy, but you can do it!

Great advice silver....I am trying the fiber thing...in India, bread is the staple food...I am eating one made of oat bran to increase fiber and goodness :)....and I see that most of the folks here talk about healthy snacking...I am not there yet...will start NOW!! Thank you for your support guys

Hello! I'm new here so I hope I don't make a mess ;)
Are you living with your parents? And are they on the heavy side?
My own folks are overweight and sometimes it almost felt like they took it personal when I wanted to loose weight. After some health problems, my father finally tossed all the unhealthy food and started to make an effort. Maybe bringing in some healthier food and start to make dinner or go along while shopping will spark an interest for making healthier food?

Im definately with dwwise. I choose to stay away from it completly. My husband eats boatloads of ice cream. Him and my daughter love sweets so its here in the house from time to time. I try to buy the more healthy snacks for them but they love their ice cream. The other night I made them cinnamon twists with icing and although it smelt delisious I know that with the way I am I cannot even have a bite. There is no such thing as one bite with me. I stayed strong and didn't even lick the icing, if I had im sure it would have been all over with!

Today I kinda had too much cashews. Yeah, that's my definition of "wrong food", because my diet is so strictly low-fat already. Other times it's hummus. I get those two things and tell myself "oh, I'll just some of this, in moderation" but that never works out.

I used to just do a "once a week" with some kind of junk food. But now I do basically what dwwise does too. After a while of just not eating the junk food, you don't want it anymore. Then again everyone is different.

And like spike99 said with the imagining it's like a battery acid to your body, that works too. Go online and google pictures of actual fat and just think about that whenever you go for the junk. You don't really want that in your body.

ew.

Ew, I googled it, omg. SO GROSS. I can't believe I have so much of that junk in my body, disgusting! That image is gonna stay in my head forever, lol. Thats a good thing though, I definitely want to get all that out of my body. =P

hey Malin....my parents though a lil on the heavy side, do not eat junk...it's my brother and my sis in law...and I can definitely not tell them what to eat...I am still trying dwwise's advise of not taking a single bite, only to fall back on it time and again....damn...it is so frustrating...wish I had better genes...:banghead:

What do you guys have for " healthy snacking"?

The easiest way is to not have it in the house. If you can't do that then try eating an apple. If you're still hungry have another apple. I would just fill your body with as many good foods as I could. Good luck.
