Sport How do teens(people who live at home) diet??

Sport Fitness
I browse these forums regularly and since I've been, I have seen that diet is key. When I first started working out like most people my age I could care a less what I ate as long as it tasted good. Now I am slowly cutting down on soda and all that other junk and eating healthier foods and more veggies and fruits. But aside from doing that, I was wondering how people around my age (16) who live with their parents do dieting, count all their calories and all that. I mean I find it hard; I don't do the weekly shopping so I can only ask my parents to get so much healthy food for me, we usually have a family dinner(how am I suposed to calculate that calorie-wise?) and it isnt always healthy and my parents probably won't let me make my little meals myself(also dont always have time)?

In case you got lost in the wall of text I'll repeat the question: How do people my age do diets? Could some pointers? I mean I have the willpower to diet except it would be very hard. Also I'm finding it hard getting my protein very high.

Thanks in Advance.

Well when I was your age I had moved out of home and thought I had a career in surfing so im not the one to ask.

But if I was you I would try and work out a ball park figure of how much money your parents spend on the food you eat a week (its not that hard) and then just ask your parents whether or not they would be happy to just give you the money provided you spent it on food and then buy the food you want.

im 18 and live at home with my dad. i just eat the healthy stuff, dont go to makky ds with your mates, get your mates to get like a sandwich or something when your out on the town, n get 1 with wholemeal bread n a lean meat filler, n maybe salad, eating healthy is earier than you think

You could talk to your mom about it, she'd probably be willing to help you out, and it may even make her think more about what she is cooking.

How exact are you trying to get? If you're trying to record exact calories, that's going to be rather tough. If you ever get the chance, watch her cook, and see what she's using, or look in the pantry and fridge to get the nutritional info off of what's in there.

If you're just trying to get a basic ball park, then ask her what all she used, and she could probably tell you decently enough for you to get an idea.

I'm basically in the same boat as you. I totally understand how hard it could be to eat properly while living with parents. What I do is try my best to get in my nutrition as much as I can. Also, sometimes when I have spare money I go buy my own supplies. I don't really have much more to say. Good luck with your pursue to healthy living.

i have dream parents !!

lol there very supportive of everything i do and my mom is a fitness extrordinare so im lucky to eat healthy

Thanks for the response guys. Well I guess I'll just ask my mom to buy a bit healthier foods. I'm trying to cut stuff out like sodas, white bread, cookies(OREOS) and other junk. It's just very tempting when you go to get something to eat and that's what's there.

My house is pretty much filled with junk food, but ever since i started eating healthy and told my mom she was understanding, nowadays my fridge is filled with fruits and veggies for me while before there were barely any, she buys tuna just for my "protein" needs, and I even got the family to switch to whole wheat bread instead of white breads. I also try to change little things, for example, if were having rice i encourage them to cook brown rice instead of white rice, just little stuff

I have siblings, so the house is still filled with junk food. But better than before.

Same here, it is getting better, except I think it would be not very possible(or VERY HARD) to do calorie counting and all the other dieting stuff at our age giving we do not prepare meals(dinner mostly)/do groceries.

I think the best course would be to ask your parents to set aside an allowance for buying food. For example, when I was 16, my parents pretty much gave me the credit card and told me to buy whatever I wanted at the grocery store. I pretty much bought junk, but I would imagine you could have done the same but with healthier food.

Or you could develop a list of required food every time your parents go grocery shopping.

I also recommend keeping food intake of your parents in moderation, and start cooking for yourself. I'm pretty sure your parents would understand if you asked for them not to cook for you any more, and if they do, to ask you before hand so you can verify that it is within your goal. I think they would be happy to not have to cook.
