How Do I Stay Motivated and On Track?

I've been working out ever since January 1st.

Every day I jump out of bed with an exercise plan and it's fun and exciting.

I'm afraid I may fall off the wagon.

What can I do to ensure I stay on track?

Any suggestions?

give yourself rewards for every x times you do something (non food rewards)

though seeing results from doing what you need to do everyday should be enough to keep you on track.

Don't worry about what might or might not happen.. just keep going forward

Workout Buddy Keeps Me Motivated

I have a friend whose wife bought him a gym membership to the same gym I go to for Christmas. So we are now “workout buddies” and so far it’s been a great thing for both of us.

On the mornings when I don’t feel like going out in the cold dark winter morning, what gets me out of bed is knowing that my friend is waiting for me to pick him up at 6am.

So this week I made it to the gym more times that I have any other week this month thanks to having a “workout buddy.” It’s something I definitely recommend for anyone who needs help getting motivated to get to the gym.

Do you have anything to look forward to? For example, I am planning a "girls weekend" to Chicago during Memorial Day weekend. I want to be able to lose weight and get in shape for all the shopping I plan on doing!!

I've just started working out myself, Jan. 1st. I've been doing this 5 days a week since and I constantly remind myself of how far I've already come and how great it has made me feel thus far. I think that's enough of a motivation!

I can't say I've been perfect with my eating habits but the next day after eating like crap, my body certainly reminds me which also helps keep me on track!

Some good suggestions...I will come back here and post if I find I've fallen off as well. Right now I"m still going strong....hope it keeps up.

all suggestions here are great. My big suggestion... have a plan for when you get bored! Seriously, no matter what you are doing now it will get boring at some point. Have something else ready for when that happens. There are countless ways to stay fit so choose from the huge list of what's out there.

Be ready to mix it up a little when that time comes, even if it means dropping a gym membership. You'll never believe how many people drop their fitness plans and gain their weight back just because they were bored of the gym, or running, or swimming, or whatever! :)

I don't like to exercise very much myself, and boredom is my biggest problem. I especially hated cardio, until I started HIIT twice a week. I downloaded some workouts from cardiocoach.com (I have no relation to them, other than as a customer), and for the first time ever, I actually look forward to my HIIT workouts. I also use an HR monitor, and that motivates me too.

On the strength training side, I work with a personal trainer once a month and get a brand new routine to follow for the month. This keeps me from getting too used to the same workout, and "shocks" my muscles. It also makes the workouts more interesting.

Finally, communicating with others who are dealing with the same issues you are seems to help as well.

Tomo, thanks for the info... I'm definitely going to look up cardiocoach.com. It's also a great thing to hire a fitness trainer once a month and get a new workout. Good going! :)

oooh, I don't think anyone is going to like my suggestion...but I'm going for it anyway 'cause I'm perverse like that!

In the beginning it's all about being gung ho and motivated and everything is all shiny and new and fun and woohoo the pounds are dropping and yada yada yada.....

At some point in time there will come days when it feels more like a chore, a burden, one more crappy thing you "gotta" fit into a busy day. A little insidious voice whispers "hey, I really don't have to do it today if I don't want to" and motivation is hiding under the bed.

And when that happens, just IMO, the only thing you can do is make like an old Nike commercial and "just do it" anyway.

You can change your routine frequently to keep getting results and keep it fresh, you can have a reliable work-out partner, and you can have a back-up work-out in place as an occassional "fun" replacement...I do all of those too, but in the end, I think the most important thing is to start building the self-discipline in the very beginning...you know - just showing up prepared to get it done day after day, accepting that some days will be golden and others dog poo.

cym, I don't like your suggestion... but you speak the truth! Some days you just have to white knuckle it and "just do it".
