How do I run?

I have been forced to 'run' at school for years. I HATE PE. They make us all run aroun a feild. It takes me twice as long as anyone else. Is there a drug that can help me?

The drug is called healthy eating and practice. :D

MANY MANY MANY people have this problem so don't feel isolated. The best thing for you to do is get a book on basic running form. Galloways is the best book but it may be a bit advanced for you depending on your goals. You can always go and sit in a book store and just read. Unfortunately running cannot be rushed, you need practice to get your body into a groove. However, if you put some effort into it you will see results pretty fast.

I've tried everything! And I'm eating as healthy as I can. But there are many foods that look like puke and there is not much I can eat. And I can only run for a few seconds and I give up. We do the beep test at school. I'm only on level on, yet all my peers are up to level 100 or something! Is there something they have that I don't have? They have to be takeing some kind of drug!

No, no drugs. Based on your comment the biggest problem you have is mental attitude. I'm sure that running is not the only thing you give up on eh?
Try to set attainable goals for your running. For example, during a run that feels like hell say to yourself you can do it!!! Visualize being a better runner, relax, relax, relax. Pick an object and run to it, then pick another. The run will seem to take forever if you are always thinking about how long it is going to be. Pick the next telephone pole and run to it, then the next sign, then that guys dog over there, etc.. If you feel really winded keep slowing down until you feel more comfortable, BUT DO NOT STOP. Once you stop (quit) and relax it's so much harder to start up again. Remember...a body in motion...

I don't understand. I can only run for a few seconds then I have to walk. And climbing stairs is painful.

I don't want to worry you but have you consulted your doctor about this?! You say that you have to stop running after a few seconds, is this because you feel short of breath?!

No. I just can't run. And I've seen a doctor. all she could tell me was that I had flat feet and bowed legs.

i agree with johnny. I have a friend like you, she thinks she can't run and can only run for very short distances. I was like you also, it would take me 12 minutes to run three laps around the track. It's mostly mental, the problem probably is that other kids make it look way easier than it actually is. You expect it to be easy, so once it gets hard, you give up. In actuality, running is hard work. you just have to push yourself.

I really try. But I just run a few steps and give up becouse it hurts! And I absalutly suck at all sports. Someone suggested weight training or martial arts But I am confused. Is there a way I can get co-odination and reflexes becouse I don't have any.

running takes time!

There is nothing easy about running, when you are not in running shape , its very hard and its easy to give up, but the only way you will become a better runner is by just practice , practice, starting out slow, and working your way up to more miles. YOu got to keep a positive attitude and keep going! Dont let others discourage you...! Good Luck

one suggestion: try running on a treadmill...they have a little more cushion which will help with joint pains.

Also if you are flat footed, you should get prescription insole inserts to help build an arch in your feet. Different shoes may also be in order.

I started by doing aerobics. It use to take me 13 minutes to run a mile and I was extremely sore, out of break, and in pain. I started doing aerobics and improved my cardiovascular system. Pretty soon, I just wanted to try running. Yeah, it was still hard but not as hard as it use to be. Then I built from there. I thought, I'll go a little farther this time. Okay, just a little farther. Try running in the country or somewhere quiet where you are not thinking about traffic, how many laps, people watching, etc. . . Just start on some long road and go to some house. The next time, go to another house or sign or something. Pretty soon you'll improve. I have no problem running 4 miles now in about 35 minutes. It works but takes time. Just don't give up! It is hard to push yourself but you can do it, trust me, I thought I never could.

It sounds very strange that you just immediatly feel pain. On a scale from 1 to 10 how intense is it? (10 being you are dying and 1 a mosquito bite). Maybe you should get another doctor to check you out if your pain is unbereable. I am concerned because you also said you cannot go up stairs without pain even. I used to have problems running as a kid (used to be obese) but my legs never hurt and it never hurt walking up stairs, I just felt tired and weak. Give us more info on what you experience please.
