How do i build muscle?

OK, i promise im not being thick, but i get confused as to how to build muscle in all areas of the body, and which exercises are relevant to that.
A lot of you have said in your replies, that more muscle is beneficial to losing the last few pounds, but here is where i get confused.

If i cycle, or run, (its cardio) but it builds muscle in my legs - so does this count as muscle building or cardio?

Obviously weights for my arms, i understand that - but how do i lift weights with other parts of my body - are we talking those machines at the gym, where you push and pull with weights attached?

I almost didnt ask this Q cos i sound very dumb, lol, but hey - you dont ask, you dont learn!:D

Hi Sophie,

No dumb questions. I'll give it a shot and am sure others will chime in.

1. I'd consider running/cycling a cardio activity, rather than a muscle building one.
2. Compound exercises, as in exercises that require the use of multiple muscles in your body. Here are some examples:

- Squat (quads, hamstrings, glutes, calves, core, back)
- Deadlift (quads, hamstrings, glutes, calves, core, back, shoulders)
- Lunge (quads, hamstrings, glutes, calves)
- Row (back, biceps)
- Pullup (back, biceps)
- Dip (chest, triceps)
- Bench Press (chest, triceps, shoulders)

Start looking at some of those exercises or even google 'full body workout routine' and you'll find a lot of examples. I hope it helps.

You build muscle through resistance training (strength training is a form of resistance training). Cardiovascular exercises (cardio) are to improve your heart, lungs, blood pressure etc. Most fatties or people out of shape just do cardio and neglect strength training so they don't build muscle.

FAB ! OK thats good i do squats, lunges and lots of rowing, didnt realise they counted, will look into the others!

when you say rowing, do you mean the cardio concept II (or similar) rowers, or strength rowing where you just do like 5-12 reps and you're exhausted (like on this pic: )

the former would be cardio, the latter would be muscle building.

If you're new at this it would be wise to get someone to show you the technique for the big lifts like squats and deadlifts. Or you could at least videotape it and post it here so we can take a look. Lifting wrong can quickly result in injury.

95 per cent of work outs by newcomers are wrongly done.
