Alright, so tonight I ventured out into the world of cooking and actually threw something together that didn't consist of a banana, peanut butter, whole wheat bread or raw fruits and vegetables. It wasn't too much different (I mean, I just took the raw vegetables and threw them into a frying pan, only a little bit different).
Here's the recipe, with the amounts, that I used:
12 oz. cooked, ground chicken
1 cup cubed sweet potatoes (with skin)
1 cup chopped kale
1 cup diced onion
Added a little bit of garlic, pepper and some lemon juice and made sure the chicken was cooked completely and the sweet potatoes were soft and DONE.
I wrapped up about 1/3 cup portion into a whole wheat tortilla. It was delish.
But then I ran into this conundrum.
How do I know how many calories I just ate?
The tortilla was easy: the package said 130 calories in a tortilla.
But then I added up all the other food calories (sweet potatoes, onion, etc) and came up with a total which I divided by 10 (I got this serving amount because I wrapped all the leftovers up in other burritos and wrapped them in foil for easy eating tomorrow and I ended up with 10 burritos total, including the two I ate tonight.) The number I arrived at was 76.
That doesn't seem right to me for some reason. Some portions would have had more sweet potatoes while others would've had more chicken. Obviously the burritos with more chicken are going to have more calories.
My final question is this: How can I accurately tell how many calories are in a dish that I made? Is there even a way to do this?
