How can I prevent future flats on my mountain bike?

I have a Diamondback 29’er that I ride for fun and back and forth to work. This morning on me return trip home I ran over some road debris and got a flat rear rite as a result. Luckily I was real close to home when it aired all the way down. I am fairly new to mountain bikes and I do not now what if anything is out there that will prevent this from happening again. I do perform regular checks and maintenance on my tires just like my other vehicles. But I would like to take it further. I saw some road bikes the other day that had airless tires on them. Is there such a thing for 29 inch mountain bikes?

I don't know much about airless tires, but I hear they're less fast and smooth when riding.

There's really not a lot you can do to prevent flats. It's always quite a gamble. I can get two flats in a week, myself, or go half a year with none. There's just always a chance that you'll run over thorns and debris wherever you go.

Carry a frame pump, CO2 cartridges, two spare tubes, and a patch kit. You will always get flats.

Some things that can help:
-- Mr Tuffy's tire liners
-- Thorn resistant tubes

Either way you should always have the gear to get back on the road/trail. :)

Thanks, that helps. I agree being prepared is a better way to go.
