How accurate are pedometers?

There are so many out there, there is no way to say. The key is to measure off the one you use to gauge it. And if you are using as a workout tool the key is improvement. Does not matter if it is accurate if you are making progress against what it says.
 
These things measure calories, steps taken, miles or km traveled.
How accurate are these?

The most accurate ones are the ones that allow input of your personal statistics (Gender, Height, Weight, Age, etc); however, this is still an approximation. As you use it, and calculate the calories burned in a calorie consumption controlled environment, and if you are tracking this and your calories, you can make adjustments (in dietary perimeters, etc), if loss isn't even close to what you project it should be close to.

I only used a pedometer that measures the number of steps you've taken. The ideal ones are the ones that allow you to enter the measurements of your strides. I found that they're quite accurate and off only when you're doing something besides directly walking but indirectly walking (if that makes any sense at all). For example, let's say I'm walking to work from my car, I count the number of steps - yeah dorky I know - and it's accurate. However, when I'm standing in line at like say to eat, I found that it's very inaccurate since it's not measuring the steps you're taking since you move one leg, and not the other.
 
it depends....some are accurate and some aren't....the one I use at my gym is pretty accurate....but, the one's tht allow u to enter your weight/age/gender are the one's that are pretty accurate.....anyways, who cares if they are accurate or not if you are benefited and see some real progress.....
 
I bought a cheap one from walmart: Complete Garbage.
