Sport Honey?

So, I read somewhere that honey is a very efficient source of simple carbs and is good for post workout recovery. I was thinking of perhaps mixing honey in with my protein shakes to increase my carb intake after my workouts. Is this a good idea or is there something better I can eat instead?

It is basically just another form of simple sugar, though with a different taste, and a higher proportion of fructose (versus glucose) than ordinary sugar.

Whether it is a good idea depends on whether you need to increase the sugar density of your post-workout eating. Although you may want to research fructose versus glucose in that context before deciding.

But ordinary sugar is sucrose right? It's a bonded form of glucose and fructose. Is there some advantage to having the glucose and fructose molecules already separated in honey?

oh geeeeez Spicey! With the subject line i thought you were calling for me specifically ;)

nevermind....

i have been taking lil squirts of honey ever since I had that slip on the no sweats challenge. It is great on a spoon of natural peanut butter, a squirt of orange blossom (summer honey) and oh yummy.

beware- It can get ya pretty juiced up.

Yeah dextrose is a simple sugar that helps get the protien into your system faster and should only be used strait after a workout with your shake. only just learned that like a week ago to

fructoses is not that good PWO, since it goes to the liver and gets converted to glycogen there, and then the liver will release it into the blood when blood sugar is low. So dex is faster.

That's why i said ...if I were you I would make honey second to dextrose.

As far as what type of carb you need post workout, in a perfect world, you just want to try and find a carb with a high GI score - which is usually a score somewhere between 70 - 100.

For what it's worth, here are some quick examples of some carbs ( with high GI scores of 80+ ) you could take and " eat " along with your protein shake.....

- pretzels
- Rice / Corn Chex cereal
- Crispix cereal
- jelly bean candy
- gummi bear candy
- Rice cakes
- dates

As the OP asked for honey or something better, dextrose with a GI score of 100 is king of the PWO carb hill.

So now I just have to figure out where I can get it.
