Home gym under 78in tall

I'm looking to put a home gym in my basement which has a height of 78 inches. Most gyms I've seem are 82 or higher. I have roughly 12 feet by 8 feet of floor space to work with. If anyone could recommend something for around (or under) $1000, I would appreciate it.

I look forward to your suggestions!

My suggestion would be to buy a power rack, adjustable utility bench and adjustable barbell and bumbell set. Power racks can be had in different heights or can be cut down as needed. I found a local guy years ago who made me one to my specifications for around $200.00. Check out the yellow pages for exercise equipment or search on line for a local builder, or you can always just take a photo of a power rack to a local welding or metal working shop and ask them to copy it in your desired height.

Thank you for the suggestion, but I'm really interested in a cable based system (so that my wife can also make use of it).

A female can't use free weights? And benfit greatly from them?

Not my wife. :)

But seriously, I've tried to introduce her to dumbells (which I'm currently using) and she's not been comfortable working with them, particularly if she's working out with them on her own.

I recently ordered a Proform Crossover, it is an elliptical/home gym in one.

I'm not sure how high it is (I'm still waiting for it to be delivered), but you might be able to fit it.

Hi grandeau,

I was in the exact same position as you a few weeks ago and just purchased the Inspire M2 home gym. It's about 79 inches at the tallest point and is basically everything I wanted in a home gym - low height (my basement is 82" in it's finished state), and a ton of exercises. As a bonus, it's user friendly enough for my wife not to be intimidated (she's never worked out before). I looked long and hard, and basically this is the only weight stack home gym that's low enough to fit. I checked out Hoist Fitness stuff, and while comparable to Inspire (maybe even a little better), it was just too high to fit in my basement.

We've been using it for a few days now and I have nothing but good things to say about this system. It's extremely smooth, and the high/mid/low pulleys give you lots of options for functional training type exercises. I also bought a couple of extra attachments - a "D" handle for one arm curls, and a tricep rope. I'm going to also eventually buy the ab bar that Inspire makes for their home gym. I tried it out at the store and it was pretty awesome.

The only caveat is that it's about double what you're stated price range is. I'm not sure how much cheaper it is in the US (I'm in Ontario Canada), but I ended up paying about $2000 CAD for it.

I'll eventually add a bench and some dumbbells for some variety but otherwise, I think I'm set for a while.
