Hip pain from treadmill

Lately. when I use the treadmill at the gym I notice pain in my hips toward the end of my workout (around 40 minutes into it), and I continue for another 10 minutes because I need to get the workout done, no quitting early! I realize this may not be a great approach, but I'm wondering if it's something I can work through.....anyway, it happened yesterday and I woke up this morning with moderate pain in my hips that I really feel when I walk.

I never used to have this problem with the treadmill, but I also didn't used to walk as fast as I do now. Should I slow down and increase the incline? Will that take stress off the hips, or should I avoid the treadmill for awhile and stick with the elliptical? Am I overdoing it?

Ya know - I've been noticing the same thing myself -but not all the time -and I really noticed it when I ran (literally) for the bus this morning - the other night i noticed it when i was walking home from the subway and it eventualy subsided - (kinda walked thru the pain) it's not a crippling pain but it does cause me to limp a little bit..

If I slowed down the treadmill a bit - it lessened.. (and when I use the treadmill it's for 45 minutes max at varying speeds for a few minutes at a time)

I can't quite say that it's really my hip though - in fact i was going to ask thismorning (but felt like an idiot doing so) if females had a groin muscle because that's almost where it is... more inner hip area...

same thing here. If I go too long, my hip joints will start to hurt. Maybe try to alternate between the treadmill and the elliptical.

I am not sure that it's the same thing you folks are experiencing, but I have had some hip pain while running, but I'm getting over it. Basically when you run or walk fast, your hip muscles stabilize your legs. Without good flexibility and strength around the hips, your legs can get sloppy and it puts strain on your hips and knees due to improper angles. Anyway, what helped me is to do hip exercises and stretches that are geared towards ITBS symptoms. Alot of ITBS knee issues actually start in the hips. You might want to research these same things. It has worked wonders for me, I can now run 4 miles hard with no issues until the very end. That is literally the most I have ran in 20 years, haven't done that since when I was in cross country in the 6th grade.

Bingo! Thanks for your responses! I was afraid I was just getting old, lol!

Needing to strengthen the muscles around my hips is very likely what I need. The last time I did this program and lost 50 pounds I was also doing Pilates, and they have some killer exercises that target that area. Maybe doing those is what prevented this problem last time. Sounds like I need to slow it down, so I'll try that and upping the incline so my heart rate stays up.

Thanks again!
