HIIT question

i am trying HIIT training and i donno if im doing it correctly or not.

i do 8 mph for 30 seconds and 10mph for a minute and i do that for 10 min and am not tired after im done, just a little winded, but i read that actual HIIT training is running full speed for 20 seconds and jog for 10 seconds for 4 min.

what do yall think i should do?

My gym instructor reckons there's a lot of misinformation about what HIIT really is. What you're doing is just plain old intervals - a form of training that's been used (successfully, mind you) for decades. Real HIIT, according to my instructor, is what you described below. It's a total of around 15 minutes, including warm up and down, which consumes about 10 minutes. And you wont be doing 10mph, necessarily. Your sprints will be at 110% of your capacity, if you know what I mean. You've gotta give it all you've got, and if you can do it for more than about 5 or 6 minutes, you're not going hard enough. But if you're doing it right, you'll be almost dead by the end of it

edit: And I think your timings probably a little off - from what I've been told, you would in fact sprint for 20 secs, and jog/walk for 30 secs, though someone else may be able to clarify with more certainty.

o ok thx, im not overweight or anything. i just thought i might give HIIT a shot because i figure long distance will wear on my joints quicker, and i hear HIIT is more efficient

I started doing the HIIT training as well....it kills me and gives me great feeling at the same time.

I run around a lake for my workouts, I first do a 1/4 jog, then walk a bit, then I sprint as fast as I can between 20-30 seconds, then walk for about 30 seconds, then repeat it. I can only do it six times before total exhaustion sets in during this work out my breating is extremely fast and heavy, not recommended for heavy, humid, hot days that is for sure. I finished with a 1/4 mile jog and a cool down....

LOVE IT!

I did 5 min walking for warm-up, then 1 min sprinting (on treadmill), followed by 2 min walking fast, another min sprinting, 2 min walking fast....I did this for 20 minutes not including the warm up or cool down.

Will this still work well as a cardio interval or should I really cut down my times and do 30 sec sprinting and 1 min walking fast???

I dno hw old this post is but i searched it and this sounds really good. Would this be the type of training id want to use for football (soccer) running?? And at the end of it should i be abosolutly f00ked??

HIIT is good for general training, sports training, etc. It is good for all sorts of trainning. I currently started doing it again. I'm not in good shape anymore. I do about 30 second splint then 90 second walk, repeat 10 times. This totals to 20 minutes not including warm-up or cool down.

If you had read the weight loss FAQ you wouldnt have to ask this question.

High Intensity Interval Training is a quick explosive way to burn fat.

If you want lots of info, scan the HIIT forum and ask for programs. Basicly after a warm up you sprint for 1min, then jog for 2mins then go back to sprinting, then running and so on and so on for 20mins.

the more fit you become the longer and faster you will be sprinting, but you always stick to 20mins.

Because it only takes 20mins, you will not feel tired after, and this can be done every day or even twice a day because you are not working your muscles to failure as if you were running for an hour.

Remember to warm up and cool down. And if your lifting weights do your lifting 1st.

Dont do any exercise before eating breakfast, this exercise is high intensity and you may get dizzy and passout if your not well fuled.

VERY IMPORTANT - Take it slow, its much harder than it sounds.

program ideas

warm up= (slowly building your heart rate to 130-150)
cool down= (bringing your heart rate down to 110-130)

s= sprinting (fast enough to last only 1min)
r=running (fast enough to last only 3mins)
w= walking (at a pace to keep your heart rate high-swinging your arms)

begginers - run, sprint, walk

r-2min
s-1min
w-3min

Wow wicked guide i think i might just use that! If i did this like 3 times a week would i notice an improvement in a few weeks?

The thing about HITT training is...
Its all about how much effort you put in.

So if your putting the maximum amount of effort in to your HITT then yes you will see a big diffrence. Make sure you have a good weeks rest when every you feel you need it.

You may be better to start with 2x a week and build up
