HIIT or jogging

I want to lose weight and for the past week I have been running on my ellipitcal for about 45 minutes each day (resting one day). I was reading about HIIT and they say that it is very good for weight loss.. Should i replace my 45 min run with HIIT? How long do I do it for each time? Do I do it every day or do I do intertwine it with my 45min running?

thanks a lot!

Yes, HIIT is a very good way to lose weight, but, you have to be medically healthy as it is demanding on your heart and you have to have some decent physical abilities beforehand. You don't do it everyday, maybe twice per week. Read the stickies for more specifics.

it's doable every day, I'd say. (I'm still alive).

It's doable and you are still alive. Okay. Drunk driving is doable everyday and most drunk drivers are still alive, but that doesn't mean you should do it every day. Nor should you do HIIT every day. Read the stickies.

Doing HIIT every day while lifting weights and while dieting is just silly.

Here's a great article (I'm pimping Lyle a lot around here today but it's worthy) on the subject of HIIT vs. SS

I did some HIIT for 20 minutes on my elliptical trainer. Basically I jogged for two minutes then ran as hard as I could for a minute. So I cranked up the resistance for that one minute then brought it back down for my jog..

is that okay? afterwards I could feel that it worked my legs a lot, and i was pretty out of breath but after reading other posts people say that you should be feeling dizzy? Or that like you cant even survive 20 minutes because you are so out of it?

Maybe I am doing something wrong? or no?

Are you using a heart rate monitor? If not, I recommend that you do. During an intense effort, your heart rate should be 80 - 85% of its maximum heart rate estimated as: (220 - your age). Advanced athletes use rate of perceived exertion (RPE) without a heart rate monitor but takes some experience.

If you are looking to develop alot of stamina levels within a short amount of training time you need to punish yourself.

Doing HIIT daily will certainly do that. But if you are just looking to get 'fit' jogging should be enough.

When I do HIIT, I jog for 2 minutes then sprint as fast as I can for 1 minute and then I repeat. I do this on my elliptical trainer, so I crank up the resistance when I sprint for that 1 minute, is that good? Or should I keep the resistance the same? Because if there is no resistance when I sprint, I feel like the machine will break ha ha. So I just need to know if I am doing it well.. I read these posts about people wanting to puke and stuff, I dont feel that way, but I do feel my body feeling really hot and sweaty and I feel a little weak afterwards, sometimes I cant even last 15 minutes... so cranking up the resistance is good? And I should do this every 3rd cardio session right? (the other is doing a 45 minute jog, at a good pace).

Thanks a lot!

Get the heart rate monitor, but if you are medically clear, you should see good results with this approach. Yes, bump up the resistance during your intervals so that your heart rate is 85% of its maximum heart rate by the end of that minute.

I would do HIIT over jogging BUT honestly cannot do HIIT everyday. Maybe every other day at best here and stead-state in between. Used to do HIIT only 2-3x per week at most before.

HIITs are tough and when I first did it properly for 30 minutes, I felt like throwing-up. Not that I am in bad shape but the intensity level is ridiculous (at least the one that I push myself to).

hey just another question. I figured out that I have enough time in the morning to fit in 15 minutes of HIIT. I was wondering if I can do HIIT in the morning then when i get home from work do a 45 minute jog? or is that "over-doing" it? I can physically do this, but just wondering if I should either do both or only one?

Another thing, can I do HIIT? I want to lose like 15-20lbs and I can physically do HIIT each day, but is it more healthy to do it like every 3rd cardio session as I stated beforehand?

Thanks!!

Has anyone read the article I posted? If you're interested in looking at the "HIIT vs. SS" debate from an intelligent angle, I suggest you do.

where can I find this article?

its in the article section,ss versus HIIT.
