Hiit me!

Hey guys. I'm thinking about adding some HIIT on my cardio days instead of long steady cardio. I have read the sticky and it's very informative...then it turned into a bunch of flaming. haha.

Anyways...

I was thinking about doing a 1:3-3.5 to start out. 30 sec sprint, 1.5, 2 min cooldown (walk). Does this sound ok? So it would look like this...

Warmup with a fast walk or a 2 min jog.
30 sec sprint
1.5-2min cooldown (walk with arms flying around)or jog if i can.

M - FBW
T - HIIT
W - FBW
Th - HITT
F - FBW
Sa - Steady Cardio with my girlfriend. (possibly off)
Sun - Off

Think that would be ok? I have been watching my diet, keeping it clean. My FBW's are great, but I'm lacking in the cardio department.

I know this has been asked but it hasn't been made clear to me...
When implimenting HIIT into my training, should I go by heart rate, or should I go by time to start out untill I get better conditioned?

Also, how long should my workout last not including warmup? How many times should I do the Sprint - Cool down?

When should HIIT be done? In the morning before or after breakfast? Later on in the day?

Thanks folks.

Can anyone help me out here with my questions so I can get to it? :D

JDie,
New to this forum, but a competitive runner since 1968. Check out some beginning training ideas in Runner's World Magazine(online) such as this one...

You may be interested in more structure, but, I'd recommend first month of a subjective discovery phase. Also, hope you know how to stretch properly to minimize/avoid injuries.

Best time of workout? By now, you likely know what works best for your mind, body and other schedules.

Best wishes

If you are not training for a sport that demands high cardio endurance, then I will say it is just fine. Otherwise, you must do longer cardio training must of the time, although not always.

For weight loss is awesome, I am having great results doing HIIT. Also training takes like 20mins so it is great.

Good luck friend

Thanks a lot guys! I think I will do 7 intervals to start out with, and with my rest, I will rest untill I know I can give it 100% on my next interval, so I'm not halfing anything. Then I'm sure the more I go, the less rest I will need and then I might be able to add more intervals and such.

Thanks a lot folks!

One thing I know, is that every time you train, you must feel exhausted (not confuse with pain!). In other words, if you train and you feel like you are getting "in shape" because you not longer get exhausted then you are underestimating your own progress.

My recommendation is to always change, so that you always need to improve. Thus, if you master an exercise, change it somehow you need to work different. If you come to a point where adding weight or more mins to cardio is almost an olympic athlete schedule and you do not want to spend that much time, then simple rest for that exercise you have mastered and come back later. You can always invent new exercises to keep you "fit"

Good luck

Regarding the time to do hiit cardio, for maximum fat burn should be done with empty stomach (2 hrs later or more after last meal). I recommend it in the morning before breakfast.

But I suppose anytime you have enough energy to work it throughly must be fine.... but do it 1st thing in the morning! lol

Thank you very much Mininegi! That was one thing that I was still confused about but you answered it perfectly. I like the idea of doing it before breakfast anyways....A good way to get the blood flowing first thing in the AM ;)

Great advice! Not to mention, a good early start in the morning will keep your metabolism revved up for the rest of the day, especially with HIIT.

No problem, I hope it helps you. The way I do hiit doesnt have to be perfect, nor it has to make you feel dizzy and bad. My combination of jumping rope, sprints, drills are fun enough to me.

Check this cone drills short video, you can get ideas how fun is to do you whole cardio training in 15 mins or less :D plus it can be done in your street or any small place like a back yard. No need to go to a track or gym.
