Helo everyone,

I have recently discovered Cohen's and came across this forum page for people on Cohen's. I have signed up and had my blood tests results and got my program. But I haven't started, I think I am afraid of whats to come with this program I think? I have done alot of programs and recently was on one that was good, but I couldn't handle the shakes any longer and I am hoping this program is THE ONE lol.

I have done some shopping for foods, but I am finding it just a little overwhelming with buying things I don't normally buy and I am not much of a great cook either, nor do I cook much at all!

Was it easy for all you Cohenites to begin ie. with shopping and the introduction to new food so to speak. What are some great tips for people like me who are finding it a little overwhelming at first to start.

Thank you :)

Nat.

Hiya Water!

The first time I went cohen shopping it took AGES coz I had to keep checking the list to see what was on it...

Cooking this stuff is so simple, there's no cheffing required.

Dive in, the water's fine. You'll get used to it faster than you think.

asy :D

lol thank you Asy :)

Phew, it did seem like ages shopping and not all of it is done yet either! It seems all the ingredients and little bit bits are amounting up to a big amount at the checkout.

Hi H20,
Don't do too much shopping.... you'll find you don't actually consume much food, so for the first few weeks I found myself throwing a lot away.
and I bought lots of things that I thought I'd use and never did.

What sort of food do you normally eat? Do you prefer food stirfried, casseroled, variety etc. What herbs do you like to add to food?

I have found the things I really use all the time are my non-stick frying pan, (I bought a new small one, and probably will need to buy another one before the end of the program it is so well used), garlic granules, dried oregano, dried coriander, dried ginger and balsamic vinegar (the best quality one I can get!). Then each week I buy meat, tuna slices, zucchini, mushrooms, green capsicum, packs of baby lettuce or spinach, tomatos and one or two of the other vegetables, plus apples, kiwi fruit and other in season fruit on the list. Every 3-4 weeks I buy fetta and cheese.
But the grocery bill for my things is pretty tiny compared to the rest of my family.

So, don't use a massive grocery shop as an excuse!! This is so much better than something like Herbalife where you need to eat shakes twice a day! You won't feel hungry, you can cook food how you like it (so long as you keep within your program guidelines), you'll have loads of energy, and lots more variety than you have with your shakes. and it works!

In terms of being a great chef, you don't have to be that either. I have a salad for lunch for either tuna, cheese or stir fried meat with it. and I have a stir fry for dinner each night, with different herbs, veges and meat in it. Pretty simple, but delicious!

Good luck and we look forward to hearing your progress!

Thank you! I think that what was kind of scaring me at the shops because there are so many things to buy but I don't know what. I think I will find some basic recipies and shop for them. Once I figure it all out it should be okay. I hope. It still is a big change and a big step in some ways, I will try and see how I go. :)

Shopping

I found I am shopping less. I always had to buy meat, chicken, vegetables, etc....but now it last longer. I bought some chicken...weighed it out and froze them in indivual baggies, a head of cauliflower....cut it up and take out as needed... Had lots of cans of mushrooms already. Went to the apple orchard and bought a large bag of apples...alway do that at this time of the year anyway. But the food is lasting so much longer...since the portions are so small...
I'm just substituted the usual stuff I previously always bought with the vegetables and stuff on the list.

You're not buying bread...pasta...tomatoe sauce, jellies, muffins, cookies, etc....so think about it ....you're really probably buying less...or will be by next week after you get the "right stuff"...AND ...it will get easier.

I guess when I look it that way yes :) It doesn't seem that bad. I did a trial breakfast with the yoghurt and it was real nice and since I am used to having a shake for breakfast when I am on a weight loss thing there was such a difference....it was real food. I think I will pre-weigh and prepare food etc to safe time and make it more convenient. I am the type of cook that can 'burn water' so hopefully the cooking part will be a breeze hehe.;)

H2O The best investment I made for cooking was a small frypan, it fits my meat and veg nicely. As I work as a reliever with no permanent base or start time I find it easier to prepare my breakfast (if it is a fruit and yoghurt smoothie) and lunch the night before. I also get my fruit, cracker and water ready then too ( as well as my CF diet coke). All I have to do is throw it in my bag and go. Often I get a phone call at 6.30am and need to leave by 7.00am, other times I know where I'm going ahead of time, but that can be subject to change :) .
I too pre weigh and freeze my meat and chicken, and label it with the weight and meal no. Then I can just grab what I want to thaw for cooking for dinner and lunch that evening.
As for spending and buying up big. I find I am not wasting as much food and buy what I need for the week ahead. There is really no need to go overboard on that first shop, just get what you think you might like for the days/week ahead and go from there. Good luck :) .

Thank you :) I will invest in a smaller frypan and prepare for the day beforehand.
