Hi, :smash: I recently found this community and thought it would be a good place to sign up as I attempt to conquer this weight loss/ fit for life journey. In Aug, 2014, I suffered heart complications and during my hosp. stay also discovered I was in stage 2 dibetes and battling high cholesterol levels. Actually, my journey started the day of the diagnosis; I made up my mind to get those numbers down and to change my eating and exercise habits. To date, I've lost an estimated total of 28lbs with a goal to loose 50-60 lbs more. It's a challenge hackling a diet that covers the diabetes, heart and cholesterol, leaving me with not as many options of fave food choices. However, I know I've got to get this thing together and keep it together. Hopefully, I can gain more insight and assistance through this wonderful community.

Welcome to the community. Great job on the weight loss!

Sunflower, I followed the advice given by the medical professionals upon my discharge. Also by having to do right concerning three separate ailments left hardly any choices to eat un-healthy. I started eating baked fish or chicken instead of my fave fried meats, including pork. I slowed down on my carbs almost to a stop (the first month only 9g/carb) per meal, then I think by the the end of the second month; I couldn't realistically do that any longer, I doubled that number. I started drinking 8-9 glasses of water per day. I cut out my desserts and ate fruits instead if they weren't too sweet as not to run my blood sugar up.

Giving up sweets was the hardest but I can remember having a sweet craving so bad I thought I wouldn't survive...lol. A nurse suggested that I go to Walgreens and buy a box of diabetic candy, the sugar free chocolate clusters. I did and the small box only had a few very small pieces inside, in which I'd treat myself to 1 piece if I felt I was good for the day. I was generally good because I was scared senseless by my doctor constantly reminding me if I don't get it right I may not be around. Yes, scared straight changed my mindset. I don't think my cardiologist believed in my effort since I'd landed in the hospital; So I had to make a believer out of myself first and then to show him I really do care.

The first month was my slowest month of the weight loss because I didn't see a drastic change until I started walking a mile on the walk trail 3-5 times per week. I discovered without exercising on a regular basis, the weight loss seemed like a turtle's pace. I think that's mostly what I did...and that first month was more of a rabbit diet...lol, of salads and fruits. Well, Sunflower that's what I did basically and thanks for your support. I still got a way to go and the biggest feat for me, will be maintenance.

Thanks Gary as far as the diabetes when I do the little finger stick now I'm getting numbers anywhere from 86 to 126 never over 150 but I'm also taking the metformin(500mg) and starlix. My goal is to not rely on the meds but to one day get those numbers without the meds...but for now I appreciate the crutch...lol

Congrats on all that you've lost so far! Good for you for starting, it's definitely not easy. But you can do it, we all can :) Coming for support is what really helps, especially when you're struggling. You may find it helpful to start a diary in the diary section so you can post how you're feeling, doing, etc. and get support that way :)

Thanks
