Hi everyone,

I started my new me project in October 2018. Thus far I’ve shed 26kg and feel great.

I used to be very fit but life got away from me. That’s not important. What is important is that I have started to make ground back. This morning I weighed in st 89.9kg. It’s my birthday in a week or so and I just want to under 90 when I turn 35.

I had tried the usual slimming pills, shakes, diets and magic cures with very little or no success in the past but now I’m simply eating right; whole foods, high protein and low sugar etc. I’m also exercising regularly. I started out walking 3km a day, that turned into 5, 8, 11 and a hard hike up a high mountain nearby every weekend. I’m now hiking and cycling regularly.

I’m fitter than I have been in 10 years and feeling great. There’s still more to go but I know I’m going to get there now.

To everyone just starting out ... start small. Don’t make huge changes in the beginning because you won’t stick to it. Start small, stick to it and increase distance, intensity etc etc and you’ll get there. Most of all though love yourself for who you are. You are perfect the way you are. If you want to shed some pounds do it but make sure you’re doing it because YOU want to for YOURSELF. don’t get sucked into what others think. Also tools and guides are just that. My bmi says I’m obese but I’m not. My muscle mass is greater than average so it throws it off. Don’t worry about fitting into any categories.

Be you and love who you are.

i have to disagree... in retrospect i wish my friends would have done more than remain in the category of "what others think" and literlly told me i was getting fat(er). if your girth is > 36" for a female or > 40" for a male, you AREN'T fine. your risk of heart disease or diabetes is much higher than average.

Well done on your loss so far

My muscle mass is greater than average so it throws it off.

While this is correct, and BMI is a terrible measurement, you cannot just assume you have a lot of muscle, it should be measured. As somebody who has a very high muscle mass (70 kg lean mass) i can certainly say it doesn't stop you from carrying excess fat.

thanks and absolutely agree. Assumption is the mother of all f’up’s. Can’t assume this. My point was simply that people shouldn’t try to fit into categories at the detriment to their health.

Hey, yes I agree. Medically there are issues that need to be resolved however my point was that in order to make long lasting change one first needs to be happy and clear in what they are doing and why. Overweight people often suffer mental health issues similar to bullying caused by their own perception of themselves. This can be catastrophic to their self esteem and in turn they’re less likely to be able to resolve the issue. First love yourself then be clear on what you want and make it happen. That is my message.

I agree with you that learning to love yourself & working on building your self-esteem is key to making long-lasting changes to your health & general well-being. It sounds like you are well on the way to being as healthy as you can be. Well done!

thanks Cate.

I think the key for me this time around was that I didn’t actually start by wanting to lose weight. I started as part of a group having a walking competition (step count) which has just lead to weight loss and rekindled my love of exercise.

I’ve now dropped from a 107 pant size to a 92 (15cm off my waistline).

The bad thing is I have a $1500 pure wool suit that I had tailor made which doesn’t fit anymore

A well made tailored suit can be altered easily, but I would wait until you will need to wear it soon as it may need to be altered again. :)

That’s true it’s very well made and a beautiful suit but it was made for my wedding so I’ll burn it and sing happy happy songs around the bonfire
