Hey there - I'm Penniwhistle, 28 male from England. Just typed up my sob story in my diary post, but starting my weight loss adventure, and using a forum for the first time in like a decade too. Hopefully some happy nostalgia in that regard!

My biggest issue has been my depression - but I've come to terms with it being a legitimate problem and not a weakness. I can make good choices in spite of it. Having spent the last five years getting my life on track, I've ran out of excuses to not deal with my weight. Hopefully here I can make some friends, learn some things and help others make progress too. I'm especially interested in figuring out some simple recipes that are tasty and healthy - cooking is one of my best skills, but I've never limited myself like I am now. Hopefully I can learn some things!

Thank you! Once I'm down 90lbs or so, would be interested to figure out the bodybuilding stuff too. For the moment I'm sticking to dumbbells and my exercise bike

You gotta fill up that skin..at least that’s what I thought..Plus it’s a outlet for me as far as stress..weights and yoga are much more healthy way to deal than to eat a pizza lol

Cooking is something I really enjoy too, and it’s been a big part of my weight loss so far! Should reach 150 pounds lost in the next few weeks...getting close!
Obviously you can try cooking recipes you find in books and online ... but the other thing you might enjoy is what I really love doing : taking some of my favorite old recipes and making them healthy. Lot of experimentation. Some epic fails lol. But some good stuff has come out if it.
One thing I’ve come to love, for example, are Overnight Oats ... phenomenal breakfast option. Once I saw a recipe online that I liked, I’ve since come up with (no exaggeration) 30-40 different types I cycle through now. And I’m inventing new ones all the time! I post them on my blog to share with people and am happy to send you a link, but as someone who loves to cook what I’m saying is you might like doing that kind of thing yourself!
I wish you the best of luck in your weight loss journey!
Frank

Sadly, oatmeal is one of the few things I really detest eating - along with bananas and cauliflower. But thank you for the reply!

have you ever tried steel cut oatmeal?... it has a completely different texture than instant oats.

i have to laugh at cauliflower... i grew up with carrots, peas and corn... when my mom discovered things that worked, she stuck with those. so i was in college before i literally tried a lot of other vegetables. cauliflower is about the last one i brought myself around to trying... it looks like brains!! ... lol. luckily i played soccer in college so piling on butter and salt to help the taste was never a problem then.

avocados are actually a better source of potassium than bananas.... just saying.

Look, we all like what we like... so I get it. But aside from the fact that your taste buds recycle pretty often actually so things you may have disliked in the past you may like now? The bigger point is that you really need to be open to new things and new experiences in your weight loss journey.
Before I started I’d have said “I really hate eating fish”. Well we eat it at least twice a week now and I’m always anxious to try new types in new preparations. I wasn’t a cauliflower fan either. Now roasted cauliflower is one of my favorite side dishes. As for Overnight Oats? They’re probably quite a distance from what you’ve experienced as “oatmeal” in the past, plus considering that you can make them in any flavor combination to match your particular tastes... just to dismiss them offhand isn’t helpful for you.
What I’m trying to say is, it doesn’t matter if you ever come to like cauliflower, bananas, or oats... but if you’re not open to TRYING any and everything that might unlock the secret to your personal weight loss success story, then you’re starting with one arm tied behind your back.
You seem like you’re ready to succeed, so just keep an open mind. “Try everything twice” is what my mom used to say about new foods. And until my personal weight loss journey I never took that to heart. But it’s proven to be very sage advice.
