Weight-Loss

Refresher

New member
Hiya, im new round here :)

This is probably going to sound really stupid! But i really struggle to eat the right amount of calories in a healthy way!

According to my BMR i should be eating 1947 with my current lifestyle. Which means if i want to lose weight it should be 1363.

I just find it difficult to eat enough of the healthy food up to that amountt! I'm quite a fussy eaterr.... so instead i just go and eat junk food and go loads over! my weight doesn't really change though... it stays around the 126-129lbs mark

I'm just starting a new exercise plan which requires me to eat even moree calories worth...

what are the best high calorie healthy foods... so i can just eat breakfast lunch and dinner and a couple of healthy snacks...

Sorry I know i sound stupid but i really just don't know what to eat. I know i'm not getting the right amount of nutrients at the moment and i know i definitely wont be when i start exercising lots!!

Hi, and welcome :)

Why do you want high calorie foods? My weight loss calorie allowance is 1885, and I try not to touch high calorie foods because they'll push me way, way over my limit. If you want to eat only 1363 calories (seriously, that's at the low end of what most people, even on diets, eat), you need to stick to very low calorie foods. High calorie foods are things like nuts (150 calories for 25g- which is less than half a handful) or that chocolate cake I saw the other day (which was over 1200 calories for one slice)- you don't want to go there.

Ultimately you need to find what works best for you (something that you like, can afford to make, have time to make, and you find filling) within that allowance. If you don't have those things then you'll find the diet hard to stick to.

The things that have worked for me have been porridge (oatmeal), unsweetened, made with 0.1% fat milk, with berries (fresh or frozen, not canned), and b) rye bread with low fat cottage cheese and tomatoes. I find these both very filling and they're good for you. For snacks, stick to fruits and vegetables as much as you can. Eliminate temptations from your life as much as you can (if you can manage it, get the junk food out of your house and keep it out. If you can't, ask people you live with to hide it from you). Unfortunately, depending on what you mean by "fussy eater", you're going to have to expand what you're willing to eat in order to maintain such a low calorie amount. (If you don't like fruits or vegetables, you're not going to be getting your nutrients and you're unlikely to be able to eat under that calorie amount without going very hungry)

I'd suggest looking at low calorie recipes on websites, searching the net for ideas, and looking to food diaries on this forum (to see what other people have done and how it's worked for them). The NHS has good, simple guidance to what constitutes a healthy diet:

Stop eating junk......

There are so many things to eat.
Just pick a protein and a vegetable for example (add other things like dairy or carbs... depends.. I have no idea what you allow yourself to eat) and make a meal of it.
Examples:
Chicken + Broccoli
Fish + Spinach
Turkey + Greens
Shirataki + Meat + Tomato Sauce

You said you're a fussy eater so I don't know what examples to really give you. Just stop eating junk.

I eat 1200 calories a day and I'm very happy with my meals.
Example of my Dinner:
Lemon Catfish + Asparagus + Mashed Pumpkin

Also I wanted to ask... why do you want high calorie healthy foods to eat?

You both asked the question of why i want high calorie healthy foods...

Its because if i sit down to eat i don't like eating loads... and if im eating healthier foods i only eat a little bit of it so my calorie count isnt high enough

Today i've had

porridge with water (because i don't like milk) honey and sultanas
A bagel with cottage cheese and pineapple
A Weightwatchers Yogurt
An Apple
A chicken caesar salad
5 Almonds

adds up to about 750 calories... I need something thats a bit higher in calories, i don't wana eat any more than that sorta amount of food physically throughout the day.

need to eat another 500.

Thank you both for your replies :)

You could google high calorie healthy foods.

Here are some that aren't really low in calories:

Oatmeal
Nuts
Olive Oil
Beans
Some Fruits (like Dates and Bananas)

I personally don't know how you can get your nutrients in without eating more than that. You look like you've had two, maybe three of your five fruit and vegetables a day, and I suspect you haven't had enough protein with a little bit of cottage cheese and the very small amount of chicken that's usually in caesar salad.

Could you graze through the day? You don't have to sit down to eat- it's generally encouraged as a good habit to get people to eat less, but you really don't have that problem (in fact, I'd say you may not be eating enough bulk wise, let alone calorie wise). Grab a punnet of fruit (grapes are reasonably high calorie for a fruit; I favour cherry or baby plum tomatoes although they're quite low calorie) and nibble on it while you're on the computer, or chop up some vegetables and eat them from the bowl. I normally wouldn't suggest mindless eating like that, but in the circumstances I think it's appropriate.
