Hi All.
Im new to exercise and need to loose about a stone maybe a little more. Ive been cutting out the rubbish and making healthier choices and smaller portions. Ive been doing lots of walking the last 6/8 weeks and now started jogging at least twice a week for 2 weeks. Im doing between 12,000-18,000 steps a day....more like 15,000 as an average. I have been doing exercise dvds too. Im a mum of 3 so cant get/ afford a gym membership.
After all this hard work ive only lost 7lbs. I do feel a bit lighter but not hugely. I feel like im working out so much morning and night with a stroll before school pick up too with very very slow results. My calorie intake is about 1, 400 but burning about 2,200ish.
Ive never been one to diet ever but would like to slim down for summer but when you step on the scales and cut back so much and it doesnt budge its quite disheartening.....
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Hope ive posted in the right place. Thank you xx

Well done for what you have done - and welcome to the forum.

So basically you've been losing about a pound a week which is really good going for someone who doesn't have too much to lose... You are getting there but not as quickly as you would like... I think that the biggest thing is that you should not get disheartened and give up. Your work is having a great result.
Once people have a small amount to lose - then the question maybe arises as to whether it is a specific weight number that they are aiming for or a particular appearance... I suspect that the appearance you crave is really being more toned... Have you thought about adding some toning exercises into the mix. Things like sit ups. You don't need to be at a gym to do lots of exercises that would help.

Thank you for your reply. You are right. Its my appearance that id like to change. I do feel a bit better in my clothes but i guess i find it hard looking in the mirror and not seeing much change or on the scales. I thought i may need to loose the fat around first then concentrate on the toning. I thought, maybe loose the bulk of my aim weight then start concentrating on toning. I do, do a few exercises in dvd videos and such like but I much prefer the jogging but you maybe right i may need to start doing it more regularly?!
How frequently would you suggest?
Many thanks for responding Xx

I wouldn't put off doing those toning exercises until your weight is a magic number... There is a lot to be said for doing something every day - because daily habits get easier to keep up... If you can miss days - in my experience it gets too easy to skip a week or a month even or onto a slippery slope and given up altogether... You could start with things like sit ups and crunches and get adventurous with suggestions from the exercise section or your DVDs.

Its funny how we come up with magic numbers when no-one actually knows our weight but ourselves (unless we tell them)...
You would almost think that the number was written on people's foreheads the way that many of us are convinced that a certain number is right.

In actual fact when we jump on the scales - the number it comes up with is simply the amount we weigh that minute. We forget that it is not how much fat we have... It is a sum total of everything - our clothes, the food we have been eating, the liquid we have been drinking, skin, bones, muscle, fat. It can vary based on loads of factors - when we last ate, drank, toilet habits, water retention. Water retention can vary based on loads of things - like a woman's menstrual cycle and how much salt you've eaten. I've known lots of women get a 5 or 6 pound increase due to water retention from monthly cycle.

Thank you for your advice. I will keep at it and try to up my tone exercises on top of my cardio based exercise too.
I really appreciate your advice. Thank you x
