Help with workouts.

Before I begin I want to explain my body style, eating habits, etc.

I am 19 (turning 20 this may) I weight 180 lbs and stand 5'6" tall. The best way to describe my body is a pyramid/diamond. My face, shoulders and chest look small and normal for someone my height, I have flabby big arms. My waist is small but, where my rib cage stops it plumps out. Best way to describe it is an spare tire. I also have a very large bum and very large thighs. (I think mostly muscle from playing soccer in high school.) I also have larger calfs.

I eat better than I used to. I try and consume lots of water, no pop, plenty of fruits but my protiens are lacking. I consume way too many carbs I think. Simple carbs and I am working on stopping that. What kind of foods do you suggest I eat to help loose weight and tone up my arms.

I joined Golds Gym today and because I am a poor college student didn't get a personal trainer. I haven't done a lot of working out since high school two years ago. What work outs/routines do you suggest for weight loss. "My" trainer if I were to get one said he thinks I should be able to loss 40lbs (1-2 lbs a week) by Sept. I really could use some help and ideas. Thanks guys. Any advice to help me on my way would be great!

hey masa
I would like to help you out. First, begin to think about your goals, maybe even write them down. Second, I would recommend that you read some of the posts I have on my site concerning similar topics. You will find these articles very helpful. Please feel free to contact me at the site, I'll respond faster, I'm still new to this forum and feeling my way around. Thanks! Hope you hear from you soon.

Hello! Welcome to the rest of your life! To fuel weight loss, I can't stress cardio enough. Run, jog, use the elliptical, walk, swim, bike, do anything that is going to get your heart rate up and keep it up. Decrease your calories, and use an online fitness diary such as FitDay. There, you can input your food and your activities each day, and it will give you a breakdown of where your calories are coming from. Typically, you should get 30% from fat, 40% from carbs and 30% from protein. FitDay will tell you that info.
Also, weight train. Women are not wired to "bulk up" like men, and 1 lb of muscle burns an extra 100 cals per day. Added bonus.
For your arms, you can't spot reduce, but if you do enough cardio and weight train, you will begin to see a difference in your arms. You will lose weight all over. If you need any more help, let me know!

there are stickied threads in the exercise, on topic, and nutrition forums..Read them...

they will give you a lot of good informaation to get you on your way to where you want to be.. .

Read, Read, Read the threads around here. It sounds like you don't like the size of your arms. "Toning" them isn't going to make them smaller so you're going to be really disappointed if that is what you try to do. Losing fat all over is the only thing that will make those arms smaller. That being said, weight training is still excellent for weight loss and health and would recommend you try it. Good luck!

I understand how you feel as I'm sure most of the members here do. But I feel like you must ask yourself this question, "What do I want to accomplish by exercising?" What I mean by that question is, do you want to lose weight or tone your muscles. I've tried to do both before and it is very time-consuming and eventually I got burnt out by the exercise program. I suggest doing mild cardio 3-5 days/week 30 minutes a day. Elliptical is the easiest but also most beneficial way to burn your calories. After your aerobic workout, knock out a few sets of curls. Vary exercises when lifting weights so your body doesn't get used to a certain exercise. Try this out, and share with us your success story. Good luck!

It sounds like you are trying to discourage her from doing both cardio and weight training. Both are beneficial and will help her with her goals. Doing a few "curls" isn't going to accomplish much of anything. So perhaps you don't like doing both..fine..but don't try to discourage other people from doing their best!

This may sound a little funny. Do this when you are on an elliptical or running concentrate on holding your stomach in. This will develop you center "core". One problem that older men have is that they let their abdominal muscles get week and this may sound gross but their insides shift down and out giving them a pot belly. See if you can find some exercises that work on your "core" you will be amazed on what it can and will do. Ask any dancer about how important your center/core is and they will tell you how important it is for posture, balance, and movement.

Also weight training is just as important as cardio. You may burn more calories and fat doing cardio but it still happens while you are doing weight training.

My intent isn't to discourage anyone. I think you heard what you wanted to hear and didn't listen to my message. The intent of my message was to tell her to have a specific goal, that's all.
