Hi, I'm a 31 yr old female, 5'2" 167 lbs. I started out at 197 lbs. I have been taking medication for bipolar since September and after getting my doses up to therapeutic levels they had a huge effect on my tastes and appetite. I'm going to see my GP tomorrow and try to get a referral to a nutritionist, but I'm open to ideas.
Most of the time I just don't feel hungry. Food isn't appealing. And when I am hungry I can't eat much. I try to eat a little bit even when I'm not feeling hungry though. Sometimes I just can't make myself. I have some whey protein that I mix with whole milk, but a lot of days I just don't want it.
Here is what I ate today:
Breakfast: hot cocoa
Lunch: Half a tuna salad sandwich on oat nut bread, a clementine, iced tea no sugar
Dinner: bottled fruit and yogurt smoothie, about a cup of mixed fresh fruit from the salad bar (watermelon, pineapple, grapes and raspberries)
Snack (a couple hours later): 1/2 cup 4% cottage cheese and several glasses of iced tea
It's still only nine o'clock so I might work something else in there if I feel up to it.
Here's a list of what I am able to eat so far, though I may not feel up to it any given day:
most liquids including whole milk and fruit juices, applesauce, squash, pretty much all fruits, mozzarella cheese, 4% cottage cheese, plain yogurt or kefir, eggs, tuna egg salad or peanut butter sandwiches, soups without chunks (tomato, carrot, egg drop) and soup with broth and tofu, fruit sorbet, dill pickles, protein powder shakes, wine especially whites
Things I can't bring myself to eat right now: most hot dishes including meats, pasta, vegetables, any raw vegetables, nuts, seeds, granola and cereal, rice, potatoes, most cheeses, anything salty or heavily seasoned, most things that are sweet unless it's a liquid or fruit (pudding, cake, muffins, ice cream, chocolate). Sometimes I get sick even looking at or smelling these foods.
I don't have a blender right now but am going to get one as soon as I can because smoothies are great for me. I can get more liquids down than solids. I only have a kitchenette right now (single burner plate, toaster oven, bar fridge) so that is very limiting as far as cooking and freezing. I also don't have tons of money to spend on food. Like, I looked at Greek yogurt, but one serving cost the same as a quart of regular plain yogurt.
I'm glad at least that the stuff I can eat is relatively healthy. I have been trying to add something new in a couple times a week, even if it's not a huge departure from what I already eat. I was only eating a few fruits until lately and none of the soups besides tomato. I bought a can of chicken to make chicken salad with too. I need to keep my sodium levels up because of one of the drugs I am taking, but that can be hard because I typically can't eat salty foods. Like I have to get the reduced sodium tomato soup.
I was thinking about making a zucchini bread, maybe with other vegetables and/or pumpkin in it. I think I could eat that. I'd like to bulk it up with healthy stuff as much as possible, maybe some protein powder even. I also have put some shredded zucchini and an extra egg in my egg drop soup when I make it.
Sorry for the long post. It's just a lot of information. I was hoping maybe other people would have ideas on what I am lacking and ways I can get it into my diet.
