Sport Help with getting started. Please :)

Alright, i know there are millions of posts probably answering my questions, so feel free to copy/paste, link etc...they are all just so spread out.

Anyways, I NEED to start eating healthier, but dont even know where to start.

I'm learning (from reading, not experience :p) that cutting calories, but not getting the right amounts of proteins/carbs/fats, will not help me reduce the size of my thighs, and loose all that fat thats causing htem to look so big.

i am already a decent weight (i dont really care about weight...its my looks), and am told that my body burns more than the average calories a day on its own. I am about 19.5% body fat, 5'3'', and 118 lbs.

I have NO idea how many calories i consume a day. I dont really get how to calcualate that! I mean, ill usually have a huge thing of pasta in my fridge, so i have no idea how many cals im eating...etc

Is it necessary that i start calculating all that out? Would that be the best start? thanks :)

Hey Oakley, I hate counting calories. I just follow the advise I read here. I go to different threads and I'm constantly gettng ideas from that!

Hope that helps

It all depends really, its not a must in any situation. Most people find it much more eye opening to count calories because they didn't realize what exactly they are taking in and its not just calories either, its carbs, fats, and protein as well as fiber, sodium and so forth. If you have a large amount of weight to lose and have never been deciplined simply haveing a smart portion of one carb and one protien source per meal is usually enough to get it kick started and on your way. However when you are at the point you are and have a very small amount of body fat to lose, the more precise you get with your nutrion intake can be a big difference. So maybe try out counting everything you eat for a week and then you can get an idea of what kind of range to stay in with the food you are eating. I personally still count all my daily intakes.

Agree with Theleip... you are already small so you will need to watch the food intake more closely. I am small and don't count calories. I just eat 6 times per day, protein/carb meals and strength train really well. I do a bit of cardio too.

At the end of the week I take my measurements. If I increased in body fat (NOT weight... but body fat) then I cut down a bit on the portion size. If I gained some muscle and no body fat... perfect. If I gain fat and muscle, I cut down on carbs a bit and up my protein a bit.

I just play around.

wow Lynn, that is nuts. I honestly dont know if i could have that much discipline. Well, i could, but i dont really want to be like that i guess (i hope you arent taking offense to that :p its not a bad thing, its just not...me...lol)

i was doing pretty good today, until i got my exam grade back...it sucked so bad, i ate my frozen CPK pizza...the whole thing :) yum! at least it was thai chicken :p im so bad :( At least i worked out today, and ran to the gym.

I think im gonna start a journal on here...i think that is my best bet. Ill probably be embarrassed to put some things down...hopefully it will make me think before i eat if i put it out there for anyone to see!!

If i just want to get back to where i was last year (get rid of this extra belly fat), and maybe a little better of course...is it realistic to be able to have unhealthy meals when i want? I mean, when i go to a restaurant, i dont want to have to ask for nutrition facts, or ask them to make it low fat or whatever. I want to be able to have a steak, fettuccine alfredo, fries, etc...

Ok, one more question...i wanted to find a person with my 'goal' body, but some of the bodies i want are impossible...i mean, my legs are never going to get longer, im always gonna be slightly bowlegged, i cant loose my hips...etc etc...

whats the best way to go about that???

No offense taken, but I am the least disciplined person on this board...lol. I don't count calories, I don't do a lot of things others do. I simply eat really well and workout often.

Only you can know what your goal body is going to look like. I saw your other thread and the pics posted in there are going to take a lot of work, a complete dedication the the bodybuilding lifestyle and a lot of money for tanning, getting hair and nails done, getting a coach, etc.

So what do you want? :D

hehe Lynn, i think you might have me confused with someone else!! I have NO desire to look like a body builder.

I like the toned look, with some 'softness' though...not crazy defined muscles, but definately a little definition
