My wife is trying to lose a few pounds. Started on treadmills 30 mins every other day. Cut down to daily food intake, no fatty food. Can't explain she still gain weight. Every time after treadmill, her weight increases, by about 0.2 pounds

During the last 2 weeks or so, she can maintain her weight at around 114 to 116 lbs. Then all of a sudden, the situation has got worse.

For some reasons since last week, she has been on the treadmill only twice (30 mins each), and on 18 Mar 07 morning, she is still 115 lbs. But this morning (20 Mar 2007), she is 119.8 lbs. Note : on 18 Mar 07 she has started taking some antibiotics for throat infection. Would the antibiotics be causing this ?

I can't explain this weird phenomenon where cutting down of the regular junk food and some exercise will put more weights. I don’t believe it was due to the build up of muscle because just a few times on the treadmill without any weight training could not possibly build a few pounds of muscle.

I've taken a dump and lost that much in about 5 seconds before. You gotta look at the averages and long term trends. Stressing out over 0.2 pounds doesn't accomplish much.

Has she increased her fluid intake?

Water weight can fluctuate enormously. My advice is to not worry so much about the scales...it messes with your head! Get out the measuring tape, and measure once a week at the same time. If she is gaining INCHES then I'd see a general practitioner to see if it is the medication.

Also since she only weighs 114-116lbs, it is going to take her a while to lose weight. Depending on her body she might not lose weight, but rather just tone up. Also the water weight has a lot to do with it. If she ate a lot of salt the day before, her body is going to retain water and that can add a couple pounds.

Listen to the replies above. They are all good.

How many calories is she consuming?

Well, we haven't calculated the calories intake exactly. But a typical day, the food intake are like : 2 boiled egg white plus one piece of ham with one piece of grain bread (no butter). Lunch is about some steamed chicken meat (no skin) plus steam veg and rice noodles. May be also an apple sometimes. Dinner is similar to lunch. This diet has been on for like 3 weeks now.

My wife has also put a stop on wine (we used to share one bottle every night). She has also stopped on crisps (used to 1 to 2 packets a day), also stopped on candies. She is doing all the right things but weight increases. She is also on the treadmill like 2 to 3 times a week.

As of last night, she is around 120 lbs on the scale.

Another consideration....

As I see it, and I may be wrong, it seems your wife is just starting out with this new fitness plan. one thing REALLY to keep in mind is that muscle DOES weight more than fat. If she is new to exercising regularly it could just be as simple as her gaining a little muscle in the process with the new exercise. I really think before you start worrying too much, you need to give it some time and rely on other things, like measurements for a start, when it comes to weight gain. Scales are finicky beasts at best and are rarely 100% accurate. Also keep in mind that the time of day (and for women time of the month), clothing worn and other factors all play a big part in accurate readings. When I weigh myself in the morning and I am 265, I can easily hop on the scale that night and be anywhere from 266-270 or more, depending on so many factors. Salt intake, water weight, bowel movements, etc etc etc. Follow her progress for a couple weeks and dont go crazy and start trying to go into starvation mode. If she Stops eating enough, she will also not lose weight, and could very easily begin to gain.

There are so many factors involved when relying on scales to determine if we are losing weight. Give it some time and be diligent about when and how you are doing the weighins, you may well be suprised. Pay attention to how she is looking and feeling, after all, that should be much more important than what a little machines with springs and levers says anyways...

As said above, you really don't have anything to worry about. Weight fluctuations are common. Now if she is actually doing things correctly, and doesn't lose weight for months on end, then, yes, something should be changed.

That said, you don't even know how many calories she is consuming each day, so how do you even know if she is in a deficit. If you are not in a deficit, you are not going to lose weight, simple as that.
