Menstral cramps.. I have them sooo severly!!! I am on something called MELOXICAM (7.5 mg) for it.. but it still hurts!! Anyone have any good home grown remedies or stuff to ease the pain? What food should I be eating or staying away from? What can I do to help this? I still have to work... and its soooo painful!!! :( :(

Hey Avi, sorry I've only just stumbled upon this.

Okay, chocolate is good when you are PMSing but once you get your period its a no-no. Avoid stuff that will bloat you like salt, dairy, sugar, etc. Gentle exercise is good for the cramps, but of course you have to feel up to doing it. Heat pads are very good for easing the cramps, as well as a hot bath. Basically, menstrual cramps are just milder forms of birth contractions, because you are actually dilating your cervix slightly (I had what felt like really severe menstrual cramps when I miscarried). So whatever women do to help during labour may help. If you are really suffering and desperate for relief, you could even try a TENS machine.

Hope this has helped.

Long Term....

Limit salt, sugar and caffeine right before...

calcium and magnesium supplements to relax muscles and provide pain relief as well as a high potency B-complex vitamin to your diet. Vitamin B6 is especially important, but take no more than 100 mg per day.

If they are really bad, certain brands of birth control pills can also help alleviate cramps as well... you might also want to mention them to your doctor if they are that severe...

For the short term
Heating pad on your back

Stretching your muscles a bit - stand about 1 1/2 feet from a wall facing sideways - Lean your shoulder against the wall, and stretch your hips towards the wall leaving your feet in place... do this a few times on eeach side...

My sister has had this her whole life. There were some things she did, but one thing I remember is avoiding dairy products during TOM. She is pretty much out of commission for a day or two at the start. She has also dealt with endometriosis...do you have that?

I, fortunately, had only moderate cramping that I was able to deal with on a general basis. If it was really bad, I would take Pamprin and that would do me wonders for a few hrs.

I really hope you find some relief! Maybe do a search on endometriosis and see how some sufferers deal with their TOM cramps.

This may sound way to simple, but it worked for me when I had issues with cramps. Bananas, I know it sounds silly. I used to eat a plain banana or make banana smoothies. If you want the recipe for the smoothie let me know :)
