Help Needed. Why Am I Not Losing Weight?

Hi all,

I'm 5'7", about 147/148 pounds, and wanting to get down to 130 (the original weight I was before I put it all on in my final year of school)

I'm really struggling to lose anything and I'm not sure why. For about 2 months now I've been exercising about 4 times a week, which is broken up into 4 hours of cardio (1x Les Mills Body Step Class, 1x Les Mills Body Attack Class, 1hr of cheerleading, 1hr of assorted running on treadmill/cycling/cross trainer etc) and 2 hours of weights (2x Les Mills Body Pump classes)

I used to snack a lot and eat a lot of junk food but I've cut down that a lot. Sure, sometimes I have the occasional snack, but normally I have some oats or yoghurt for breakfast, a sandwich or salad for lunch and then usually some chicken, rice and vegies or pasta for dinner.

Does anyone have any idea why I am not losing weight - what am I doing wrong? And any suggestions for what I should change? All comments welcome! Thanks heaps.

I'm not sure what Les Mills exactly is, but your cardio needs to be around 65-70% of your MHR (220-Age) for at least 45min (preferably an hour). As for your diet, try throwing another meal in there. Some ideas could be:

1. Egg whites + oatmeal
2. Tuna/Grouper sauteed in olive oil
3. Chicken breast salad w/no fat ceaser
4. Fish/Redmeat/Chicken/Turkey/etc +veggies

Try tracking your calories for a week or two, using something like . I'd bet a shiny nickel that you're eating at close to maintenance level, even taking your activity level into account.

I am having the exact same problem as you are... Ive been working out since the 3rd week of march and i'm not really losing anything.. ive even become a veggie. one thing i havent stopped is drinking... and i think thats my problem. do you drink alot? try to cut it out for a week and see if that helps.. also.. i just recently started subbing one meal with a huge healthy salad. i did notice the scale dropped a lb this morning.
also.. maybe take measurements.. its not always the weight that counts.
even though im having the same problem, i hope you might find my suggestions useful
just stick to it and results will eventually come.. im sure you can do it :blush5:

I HATE, and I mean ABHOR, counting calories. But you gotta do it. No matter what you think you are eating, it is almost always more than that. Once you get to know the caloric content of food better, you can wing it a bit. I couldn't believe how many calories were is a flour tortilla when I put that in my program yesterday. My 'light meal' turned into a 700 calorie feast...oops! I need to plan better next time!

Even if you are eating all healthy foods, eating too many of them simply means too many calories. Too many calories means no weight loss (or even weight gain...).

It sounds like you have reached a plateau.

Your maybe burning as much or more than you eat. Where your body is trying to store everything it gets. Symptoms can be more tierdness than usual and a decrease in going for a number two. Trying eating good for 2 weeks including some good treats and cutting down the exersize and take it easy. Then after the two weeks get back to your current regieme.

I can tell you the "only" way I can lose weight. I track it with CalorieKing software in my Palm Pilot. (I have no financial interest in the company.) They also have a desktop version.

It's easy to track. That way, I know exactly (or very close) how many calories I eat per day and how much my exercise has used up. I can lose two pounds a week using this method --- with or without exercise.

In addition, I'm using clean eating and the Muscle Chow cookbook. The recipes are extremely easy and the meals are just great.

its all in the math. calories burned needs to be higher than calories eaten
