I am 27 years old, tall roughly 5"11 and weighing 200lbs, sounds horrible i know, but i am actually not terribly "fat" looking. i just t twish to loose 20 or so pounds, and aside from the obvious exercising i would like some good tips to help get rid of these extra pounds i am carrying. I have been eating 1200-1500 calories a day, lots of fish and poultry, eggs, veggies, fruit, whole grains etc.. and have been drinking only water all day long, a minimum of 12 glasses a day. i have been doing this for 3 weeks now, and lost about 5lbs, but for the past week the scale has stayed the same fluctuating between a pound or two. i guess im feeling discouraged, but i know the weight gain didnt just happen over night, so i dont expect to just loose it over night either, but just want to ensure that i am on the right track. this is something i really want for myself so i am going to stay true to my diet and open to everyones helpful positive feed back. also i used to be horrible for late night snacking and not eating or drinking much durring the day and engorging myself with food at dinner and then snacking unhealthy cravings like chocolate, chips etc... i have cut that all out, and eating breakfast, lunch, snack, dinner, snack. with pleanty of water. i do however sometimes crave a snack at night, i have reached for some fruit, or melba toast. please help!

1 egg scrambled

piece of whole grain toast

AI don't see any issues directly with what you're eating, and counting calories IS helpful, but everyone's bodies work differently. The best advice I can give would be to eat ONLY if you're hungry. Eat breakfast, use portion control and eat just until you're full and eat more when you're hungry, only until you're not hungry anymore.

Hope that helps. :)

Hi Heather,

Have you ever cut gluten out of your diet? I spent years of my life around 205 (I am 158 now) and I had tried EVERYTHING to lose weight, counting calories, jenny craig, weight watchers, nutrisystem, etc. I have done it all. I also would work out and have a trainer for much of these diets so I was working out and eating right and never lost weight.

I found out last year that I am intolerant to gluten. I was told by my doctor that everyone is intolerant to gluten, much like we are all intolerant to lactose, but some people can just handle it differently. She mentioned that for people who have a higher intolerance to gluten, consuming it while trying to lose weight will pretty much ruin your hopes for weight loss. I've also been told by my nutritionist that soy is a woman's worst enemy with weight loss. Trying to cut those two things out of your diet might help. Sometimes it is not just about calories, but about how your body reacts to the foods you are giving it. For example I learned even though they seem healthy, I have to be careful how many bananas I eat, but I could eat oranges all day and not gain weight.

I think you are spacing out meals and snacks well and while sometimes only eating when you are hungry can work, but I found I have to eat even when I am not hungry to keep my calorie count high enough to stay out of starvation mode. I could go a day without eating if I'm busy and not even realize it but thats not good. Everyone has a calorie window that works for them and weight loss. I can personally stay around 1200/day however if I work out I have to add 200-300 more calories that day.

The main thing is that everyone is different, and our bodies react differently. What works for me may or may not work for you. If you're interested in gluten free eating it takes 28 days to remove gluten from your system and you will know pretty quickly how you feel and if you are of a higher intolerance. Good luck!
