HELP! Mother of 3 Starting to get fit!

I am just starting out and want to lose weight! I want to start running, but I know that diet is a big aspect of weight loss as well. I am pretty strong and muscular... it is just covered with a layer of fat that I need to lose from having 3 kids in 4 years. I have a daughter who just turned 4, a son who is 2 1/2, and another son who is turning 1 next month. I want my energy back so I can tend to them better and a body that makes me smile!

I am a bit overwhelmed and I dont know where to start. I would like to eat healthy but I dont really know what that means either! Any suggestions for weight loss running, excersize routines, and healthy eating would be GREATLY appreciated. I want to lose 45lbs. and want to do it as quickly as possible.

PLEASE HELP ME!!!

I started running by first bicycling some weeks (because I was an untrained bastard who just quit smoking) to test my condition and improve it a bit and develop some muscle, then when I started running I found a track about ~5km and started running it very slow, my 'thing' was to be able to complete the track, so I did and I began running faster and faster and pushing myself more, after some time I took a week off to let the body rest then I started to increase the mileage (rule is never more than 15-20% pr. week but I did 100% hehe) when I felt comfortable with that increase I started increasing speed, after some time I also started to play with fartlek, anyways hope this helps you remeber pain is weakness leaving the body  :D

Keli - welcome to the forum! I am also a mother of three kids. :) As far as eating goes, u will want to eat every 2-3 hours - 5-6 small meals a day. U want to make sure u get lots of protein (something I STILL struggle with). I love to run. You may want to start with taking speed walks. Not sure. there is a thread somewhere that is posted about the 5 guidelines to losing weight...u need to check it out...

Welcome, indeed! I have two kids but didn't go "back" to fitness until my baby was 2 years old...of course in the olden days (my kids are teenagers now) we gained less than 20 lbs so i only had firming up to do, not weight to lose....

Your baby isn't even a month old; ask your doctor when you can go back. A lot will depend on how you feel....are you nursing?

Anyway, all the best to you!

Just make sure not to injure yourself. Last year I got back to working out after a long gap. I was able to go on for a month and my right knee started giving so much pain. I lost 6 months cz of that 1 stupid quick goal. So be steady and patient. I learnt it hard way.

Me again...

Just a little backround... the littlest is almost 1 YR not month... I started running a few months ago and then quit because it was too hard when the baby was still waking up in the night. I was up to running 4 miles in the morning. I want to return to at least a 30 minute run (about 2.5 miles) but how do I push myself to run faster? I was able to push myself to run for up to an hour at a pretty slow pace... iPod helps :) and should I also be strength training? any suggestions on work outs I can do with 3 kids at home! I work from home, so there is sometime during the day that I can dedicate to myself. Thanks for the info so far! It is really helpful! I start my running up again tomorrow! Wish me luck!

Hi Kelli,

I'm also a mom, I have four children born within 5 years time. I think alot of what you probably need is good nutrition. I wouldn't worry about how fast you are, but more importantly was your workout effective. Another way to speed up weight loss and look better faster is weight training. I know it has made a huge impact for me to lift weights. Best of luck. There is alot of great advice on this website, you just need to use it!

I remember when I first started running after joining the Army, it's tough at first. My favorite method was to run for an hour solid, no matter how slow or fast. From what i've been told over the years, running at a slow enough pace so that your breathing is in the range that you could carry a conversation is a good way to keep yourself from burning out before you finish your run. I've been told that's why military units sing cadences while running.
